Question:
Have recently bought the bruce lee boxset on play, also bought police story cheap and was wondering if there are any other films you can recommend.
I heard that iron monkey is quite good, but i really prefer realistic fighting. Also are there any bargains to be had on region 3 that arern't avaliable on other regions.
Finally what's the best version of rumble in the bronx because it hought this was great:)
any thoughts appreciated:clap:
Drunken Master 2,( no R2 dvd) or Legend of Drunken Master. R1 title
Best ive seen
Iron Monkey uses a lot of wirework so you'd be best to avoid it if you want realistic fighting.
One of my favourites is My Father is a Hero with Jet Li, its also pretty cheap to pickup!
I've got to recommend the Streetfighter movies starring Sonny Chiba, as seen in True Romance:
Streetfighter
Return of the Streetfighter
Streetfighters Last Revenge
Sister Streetfighter
IMHO better than any of the Bruce Lee movies as Sonny plays a complete SOB.
When a young couple hire him to break their father out of prison in the first movie and then cannot afford to pay him he throws the guy out of his appartment window and then sells the girl to the Yakuza who promptly put her on the game:smokin:
I'm not sure if these are out on DVD as I got them on LaserDisc years ago but well worth keeping an eye out for.
You must buy Drive: Directors Cut (R2 HKL).
There's a jet li film on channel five now.
goblin is my father is a hero on region 3?
any other recommendations
any idea if they jet li hkl boxset on play is any good?
Magnificent Butcher
Miracles
Police Story 2
Ninja In The Dragon`s Den
Mr Vampire
All of which you can get cheap from benson's world or splash.
if you like fist of fury you must get the jet li remake fist of legend
fist of legend - jet li's best film. there is a R3 copy that has original language, it's hard to track down as it's OOP but worth it. The versions available now are by Buena Vista and have horrible horrible dubbing, if ou can't get anything else watvh this one as the film is fantastic but you will learn if you are getting ino martial arts movies that beuna vista are evil people and slaughter many good kung fu movies. if you can stand VHS i highly reccomend the made in hong kong VHS version of fist of legend - widescreen and sbtitled, one of the few videos that is better than a dvd.
i second the reccomendation for drive, and you should consider once upon a time in china 2 though i'd avoid the rest of the series.
thanks for the advice everyone.
I have been looking on dddhouse and they have meals on wheels with jackie chan is this version any good?
Also any other region 3 dvd's you could recommend?

Its cheap cheap cheap, and not too bad to watch (but the picture won`t win any prizes), subtitles are typically not the best. Worth getting as a fun evenings entertainment unless you absolutely have to have perfection.

You can get them very cheap on R1, under a tenner for three films on one disc. The picture isn't brilliant (VHS standard), but well worth it, if like me, you hadn't seen the films before.

Any idea where the best place to get them is????
Meals on Wheels is a future HKL release so thats something to think about.
If your after realistic fighting than Im afraid you've seen the cream of the crop with the Bruce Lee movies (theres a perfectly valid reason why he's still so highly regarded and respected to this day).
Steven Seagal is probably the most realistic martial artist involved in movies today but the films themselves obviously leave alot to be desired.
Fist of Legend is worth checking out but there isnt a dvd release worth going for, although as pointed out there is a good VHS tape.
Most Hong Kong action stars like to mix fantasy with reality styles (something Bruce Lee was pretty much against) so if you want to expand your martial arts collection, your gonna have to try and start suspending your disbelief.
The Jet Li collection boxset is great other than Hitman which is pants and can be brought for £3.99 from Play (pre-order - do a search for hong kong legends). The other 2 movies in the set (Once Upon a Time in China 1 & 2) are superb films that helped pioneer the Wire-Fu genre most commonly seen in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
The best HKL boxset (other than the Bruce Lee one) is the best sellers collection, which is a little more diverse than the other sets and should help you figure out which type of martial art movies you like.

Dvdsoon have them for just over £5 per disc + p&p, while ********* have one of them for about £10.

I could recommend dozens of great movies which arent available on other regions but its hard to know what you will and wont like at this early stage.
But if your going through a Jet Li phase then a few of his best R3 titles are - Swordsman 2, Fong Sui Yuk, & Fong Sui Yuk 2. All Wire-Fu movies & I would rate these a mile above the films you currently have in your basket.
fist of a legend is a must see
its on sky movies from time-2-time
no announcements for Wheels on MEals yet :(, its my fav JC film.
but just to let you know, there isnt a 'complete' DVD of Wheels on Meals out there.
there are 2 version from HK, i think one Megastar, the other one Universal (i think)
one is cut, and the other is missing the outtakes in the credits.

i can see this is gonna work out quite expensive:norty:
To be honest with you i'm pretty open minded, so any suggestions are appreciated.

it's about £4.00 at dddhouse so will get this now and then get the hkl release when it comes out.
See my sig for HK film recommendations thats all you need to know! :)
By the way, anyone looking for the Streetfighter films on *********, Dvdsoon or Dvdboxoffice, should put "sonny" into the search rather than Streetfighter, otherwise you either get no results, or the Van Damme flick.
van damme's BLOODSPORTS ,one of the best hard hitting martial arts of all time (this film ROCK's even if it was released quite a few years ago, just watched it a few days ago , and still as good as it was when it cameout)
Tafsir
No one has mentioned Project A thus far - that is a must buy, its non-stop martial arts action and its one of the funniest Jackie Chan films out there, imo.
Magnificent Butcher and Iron Fisted Monk are also well worth checking out.
Police Story > Police Story 2 imo, the former being a superb film, the latter being just good.
Legend Of A Fighter, one of my favourite HKLs - get that...
Prodigal Son gets my vote.
Why has no one mentioned American Ninja 2 with Michael Dudikoff? :D
bit of an update.
managed to get fist of legend on dvd, great fight scenes and got police story and thought that was brilliant as well.
Any newer films anybody could recommend?
legend of a fighter and iron monkey m8 are both top films
Rapid Fire
kiss of the Dragon
police Story 2
Project A
Once Upon a time in China
The Best of the Best
