how much could you spend?
Question:

was getting frustrated yesterday with my ever expanding 'wants' list. I was just thinking how much I could spend if I had the money. Obviously my 'wants' list is not that long (about 20) but I honestly think I could double my collection without buying for the sake of it.
How about you? For arguements sake you could buy as many dvds as you wanted, but weren't aloud to buy crap or upgrade versions just for the sake of it, how much do you think you could spend?

Answers:

My wish list is only about 6 titles long - a couple of Ed Burns movies, Clerks, Clerks TAS and Vulgar, all of which I'll probably get when I'm in the US in a fortnight... so I could spend about £90. Which is nice.

I feel really guilty if I buy more than 5 in a month! You certainly won't be short of something to watch Tiffany. I could probably find 10 to 20 a month to buy, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with that many unwatched discs. I have trouble keeping my unwatched pile down even with my meagre social-life, you must either spend all your time watching dvds or you've got a bookcase full of unwatched films! ;)
I leave my unwatched pile in clear view on my bookcase - helps me resist the urge to buy too many - although I'm thinking of moving the pile to next to my computer where I can see it while I'm ordering stuff!

I get 8 to 12 a week, mostly titles that came out prior to given week, 'cause only 1 or 2 new releases are good.
This is me not limiting myself. When I was, it'd be 2 a week, but I get mine real cheap, but not used, so I'm happy.

Answers:

I limit myself to about £50 a week, and alway have to buy new but recently ive been buying second hand on here. wich is a first for me as my money seems to be going further!

Answers:

My wishlist is about 150 movies right now! I bought about 20 last week, and I've promised myself one a week from the list, so in a few years I'll be there. Thankfully I don't like many new films so there is very little distraction from me completing the wish list, with only the odd release getting in the way - such as Don't Look Now a few weeks ago.

Thank you for asking and allowing me to explain: 99% of the DVDs I purchase are to replace pre-existing VHS tapes I own. The prices for new DVDs for these replacements can be as low as $5.00 a piece. They usually average between $10.00-$15.00. I have a set-in-stone list I am trying to replace and I figured 25 DVDs a week was what I could afford. Once that list is finished, I will only buy the odd new release if it's something I really want. Yes, I have a good paying job, money in the bank and many credit cards. If there is anything else anyone wants to know, feel free to e-mail me. :D

I have spent over $200.00 a week and I do presently. I am pretty close to replacing those on my list, so I don't have much longer. I know it seems odd to people to spend so much on DVDs, but my house and car are paid for and except for utilities and credit card payments, I have money to spend. It is a hobby/passion, but an expensive hobby/passion for sure. :oh-hum:

My wants are not as great as my wish to watch list. Its just that I have to buy the DVds I want to watch. If possible I will rent everything or buy silvers if I can not rent. This leaves me with 2 or so purchases a month.
I'm unemployed  Otherwise I would cut out silvers and buy 5 - 10 a month like I use to but still rent as much as possible.
And to add further ... I really hate silvers and I would only recommend it to desperadoes like myself.

I usually keep on top of my wants list and probably spend about £150-200 a month on films and try not to have alot that I haven't watched at one particular time. I tend to judge what to buy by what particular directors work i'm into at the time. One thing I wish i could afford would to be able to go out and buy a particular filmmakers back catalogue all at once.

I know, but when I've been unemployed / at Uni and needed to eat etc... I've always gone for second hand rather than silvers. Works out about the same price, I reckon.

Silvers work out to be a pound in HK cheaper than 2nd hand which make up 50% of my DVD purchases these days!

I have no definate wishlist. If it was American films. It'd be on one hand. If it was either Hong Kong, Korean, Japanese titles. It's an ever growing list from month to month. I've only started to say no to just any Hong Kong film (or have I?).
As non of the films I want are "Blockbuster rentals" material (nope. I'm not talking pRon here) I have to buy what I want to watch. Expensive? yes
For a Uni student that doesn't get a student loan. A bloody nightmare (I think I spend £250 a month on DVDs)
Good thing that hong Kong dvds are cheap. Not so with Korean dvds :(
And Cirrus has a difficult task trying to avoid silvers. Since it's most probably cheaper than renting, it's the only viable solution for a skint monkey like him. I get funny looks for turning down silvers round our way like, but I've always said that there's very little that interests me coming out from the states.

The one and only silver I have ever bought was the chinese version of crouching tiger hidden dragon when you just couldnt get the original one that had english subs and soundtrack for love nor money. Suffice to say I wasnt very impressed when it kept jerking and stopping when I played it one my samsung 709.Made my mind up not to buy anymore, apart from the oblagatory Star Wars trilogy of course;)
But if I wasnt working I doubt that I would buy any dvd, well certainly not the amount that some of those here that arent working! Saying that I dont have a fantastic paid job and we have two kids and a nother due in may next year :)
But good luck in finding jobs btw, cos Ive been there and done that and it is a bit soul destroying to say the least:sad:

I meant that 2nd hand DVDs make up the bulk my DVD purchases these days not silvers. The silvers I have been getting are only movies that I can not rent (korean) everything else I buy original including the GBP100 european excursion I spent on recently (thank you dividends).
Silvers are harder to come by than you guys in the UK think ... people think its really easy to buy silvers in HK but that is simply not the case you have to have inside knowledge like me (someone who spends hours checking out dark and dank shopping malls) to be able to buy them. Law enforcement in HK is one of the best in Asia and they keep these pirates on their toes all the time and no stall is in the same place for more than a short period.

Whilst in hong Kong, the policing for silvers is ver much on the most part in control. Just over the border in Shenzhen, the only things you can buy are silvers (from what I've heard).

Your shelves must be groaning under the weight of those shiny little discs, snugly packed in their amarays/snappers/jewels/other cases.
I assume you lend DVDs out to your mates; how do you keep track of who's got what? Must be a freakin' nightmare.

Tiffany - I know you said you are replacing many VHS tapes but how many of these have you actually had time to watch? I've (mostly) stopped buying - apart from any particular bargains - because I have about 20+ films to watch :( Some are still sealed!!

There are very few people I trust to lend them to. Most of the people who ask to borrow them take pride in their own collections and know how to treat the discs and always return them as soon as they are through. I have generic amaray cases that I use specifically for borrowers and I will lend them out in those (like Blockbuster :D)

Hi Gromit - I have seen all of them - I make it a point to watch them as soon as they arrive in the post, or as soon as I make an over-the-counter purchase because if they are defective or the wrong disc I need to make a return or replacement - I don't want a hassle from the store or DVD online supplier telling me it has been too long and why didn't I do it sooner.

ok, that's it Tiff - I'm making you my official DVD collector's role model. :smokin:

and to the original poster's question -
I'm a late starter at building my DVD collection (end of last year) so I've got lots on my list.
As it is I buy about 5 to 10 a week, but give me the cash and soon enough I'll be giving similar answers to astound people (what?! you've got HOW MANY?!!)
