Hammer : Warner UK vs Anchor Bay US
Question:

Fellow Creatures,
does anyone know if the forthcoming R2 Warner "Devil Rides Out" will have the commentaries and extras from the R1 Anchor Bay release?
And what Hammer titles do Warner have the British rights to that are already out as R1 AB discs?
Yours Monstrously,
Lik.

Answers:

I haven`t seen any specs on the R2 version of devil rides out, I don`t think that any have been released yet. I would say that going from previous track record that the warner disks will not be superior to the Anchor bay disks. All the R1 Hammer DVDs I have are excellent quality and are well worth getting.
btw, there are red DVDs out of hammer titles in R2 (same colour and packaging as the old R2 VHS). Are these the aforementioned warner releases? From the specs on the back these all seemed to be mono and non anamorphic, so avoid them if at all possible
EDIT: actually the red ones seem to be Canal+Media releases, and As I say, these seem best avoided

Now I`m confused, looking at
http://www.play.com/
They have red packaging for the R2. So maybe the warners are the ones in the red packaging. Given that its listed in mono and non anamorphic, they are probably using the same master as they did for thier VHS releases, which was a bit crap IIRC. Go R1, which is DD5.1, anamorphic and has guaranteed extras, even if it costs a bit extra.

Answers:

Just avoid the UK releases and go for the Anchor Bay one's.

Gotta agree with Floyd; Anchor Bay "Hammer Collection" is THE definitive release for all things Hammer. One or two are going OOP mind so you need to move quick. The Reptile and Devil Rides out are two examples.

Warner also mucked up the R2 "Dracula Prince of Darkness" giving it an AR of 2:55:1 with no extras. I've been most impressed with AB though.

Thanks for the heads up; I keep meaning to buy more of AB's excellent Hammer Collection movies. Devil Rides Out now ordered; what else is going OOP besides those two, do you know?

I too would like to know where you got this information, Paul?
I have a few of Anchor Bay's "Hammer Collection" DVDs and I am very pleased with them, but there are still many I have yet to pick up (DRACULA - PRINCE OF DARKNESS, THE PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES, RASPUTIN - THE MAD MONK, THE REPTILE, THE WITCHES, THE LOST CONTINENT, HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE, THE LEGEND OF THE SEVEN GOLDEN VAMPIRES).
Which titles will be going OOP exactly? I'd appreciate a reply, because even though Anchor Bay titles often do go OOP (George A. Romero’s MARTIN [1978] is a recent example), I hadn't read anything about the Hammer discs until now!

Yes I was very disappointed with this - in fact I sold it as soon as I saw what it was like without even watching it! I must get round to buying the AB version.

Whatever you do, don't buy Anchor Bay's Frankenstein Created Woman as these have suffered from rot. The discs were badly
manufactured, the ink has broken down the playing surface on nearly (if not) all of the discs produced. My disc seems to be pretty standard by all accounts. It was fine for about a year after which it has become unplayable.
This is a shame as it was a great disc.
