Question:
Apparently there will be 2 versions; a standard single disc & a 2-disc SE set exclusive to HMV.
See here (http://www2.r2-dvd.org/article.jsp?sectionId=2&articleId=4515) for details.
Looks like we will be missing out on the 2 commentaries & script features for starters.
so how does this compare to the Canadian 3 disc?

Like a small brown Richard the 3rd against a polished diamond.
Wasn't the commentaries in French though?

yes but everything from the french 3 disk boxset is being english subtitled (including the commentaries) for the canadian release :)
Therefore it is by default the better release :)
I wonder if the HMV exclusive will be available in Ireland? Why is this version only available in HMV?
HMV do that sometimes
Well saying that they normally do different packaging, not an entire extra disc!
Just to throw a fly into the ointment, if anyone is settling for a version sans commentary, it looks like the Hong Kong (R3) release might be the way to go. It has French DTS and DD5.1, English and Chinese subs (removeable of course) and is only HK$95 (US$12).
This is being released on 13th August by IVL who have done excellent work on their releases of the Miyazaki animations (Spirited Away, Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service etc).
Those afore-mentioned titles have all been two discs (one feature and one extras - same as official Japanese releases), so there is every chance that this may be as well - despite the fact that DVDShelf doesn't say so (they are not particularly renowned for their level of detail though).
regards, Tim...
I'm tempted by the R3,anyone interested in co-buy ?
Can anyone clarify whether or not HMV version is director's cut? Apart from the commentaries (which I can't imagine finding time to listen to), the R2 HMV and the canadian special edition seem pretty similar. Plus HMV comes out a week earlier, and is the same price on their site as the dvdsoon price on the Canadian version - well, £17.99 plus shipping at HMV.
The answer to this may be obvious somewhere, but I cannot find it.
thanks in advance for any help

I think the UK version will miss the 2nd making of documentary. The BBFC has only rated the 80 min one. There is also an additional 90 min documentary which was on the 3rd disk of the French LE 3 disk version and will also be on the Canadian 3 disk version.
Here is a link to the item on DVD Soon - still cheaper than HMV overall:

Anyone confirm the specs and English subs on all features?

R3 specs - DTS,DD5.1 ,English Subs and no extras of any kind.
Worst of all it's 4:3
I can confirm the HK R3 is 4:3 but it does not say on the box and its a single disc release - avoid!

Yes I just found that out... when I put it in my player :(
Still, it was reasonably cheap and it does have a very good transfer and sound (OAR aside), so it will have to tide me over until it is released locally, after which I can sell it off to one of those punters that have an aversion to black bars.
