Question:
Has anyone actually baught any superbit titles? Are they worth it? What do we all think?
My own experience comparing the R1 Superbit Bram Stoker's Dracula with the R2 version is that the Superbit version is slightly more detailed both in terms of picture and sound, but there's not a lot in it - especially as the original transfer was pretty good to begin with.
The general consensus is that unless you're watching on a giant screen (36" or above) and a high-quality sound system it probably isn't worth upgrading - but if you are, it might be.
But the term 'Superbit' is just a gimmick - it's not a new DVD format, it's just one that's got an unusually high bitrate thanks to dropping extras in favour of maximising picture and sound quality. In other words, loads of other distributors effectively release "Superbit" titles, but without the brand name!
I thought they were supposed to have higher bit rate/less compressed audio? Dunno bout the picture as apart from transfer is there anything else that can be done? cause it aint like audio is it??
they all include both a DD5.1 and DTS soundtrack, but I hear that the latter is only half bitrate (784 is it?) which is a bit silly when you consider say the DTS Galaxy Quest which is full bitrate and sounds rather decent to say the least!
When are they releasing 'Superbit' for R2?
I'm not 100% but aren't they available now, but only through Columbia's website or something? www.cthe.co.uk
EDIT - yep, they are!
Play also have a whole bunch of them listed as forthcoming for region 2 including some not available on region 1 including Men In Black, just do a search for suberbit.
will
...you won't find much if you look for "suberbit"... however, you're likely to find plenty if you look for "superbit"...

I bought the french R2 superbit 5th Element and it makes the uk 'standardtbit' ?!?one look like it was taken from VHS.
Not sure if this is due to superbit or just a better transfer coz' the uk transfer of 5th element is mince...

The standard R2 versions of The Fifth Element are notoriously poor - in stark contrast to the original R1s, which are excellent - apparently because Luc Besson refused to release top-quality mastering materials unless the R2 distributors agreed to his demand not to include any extras. Presumably this doesn't apply to the R2 Superbit edition, which of course automatically goes along with Besson's demands!
I was tempted by the R1 Superbit, but to be honest the normal R1 is pretty damn good, so I doubt the improvement would be that spectacular.
Thought the differance was too good to be true....
