British War Films Box Set R2
Question:

Just to say that, having seen all but "The Colditz Story", how good the picture image is on "The Dam Busters", "The Cruel Sea" and "Ice Cold In Alex" (a really great anamorphic 16:9 picture)
A great collection of films.
:)

Now if only we could get some more of those great British wars released, I'd be happy, e.g. Operation Amsterdam, The Wooden Horse, The Enemy Within, etc. Can't see that happy unfortunately, so those VHS off-air copies will have to last I guess. :(

I heard they have no subtitles. Can you confirm it for me. What a cruel thing to do as some old people might like to watch that with poorer hearing these days.
I have been studing colditz story in my English lesson long time ago. it would be nice to see it with subtitles.

Just checked on "The Colditz Story" and "Ice Cold In Alex" Legendary and I'm sorry to confirm no subtitles. That's a shame.
Cervaro, in addition to your titles, I would like to add "Carve Her Name With Pride".
I would have got "Stalag 17" (American, I know) but I couldn't stand that 'comedy duo' Bluto-looking chap and the little guy - they spoilt the film for me....and that scene when 8 or 9 announcements were being made and someone shouts "At Ease" after each one really grates on me- awful.
BTW "Studio-Canal" have released the "British War Film" Box Set. Who owns this company?

Answers:

Well thank for it, if they don't supply subtitles they will not get my money, as there are hundred of DVDs to choose anyway.
I refused to watch program without subtitles (apart from Sport)

I believe it’s Warner’s.

I believe it’s Warner’s.
Warner are only the distributors.
The copyright to the film is own by the French Studio Canal Plus.
They bought up the old UK studio rights years ago.
Same with the forthcoming Ealing Comedies which they also own.
All these British Classic films owned by the French :(
I presume the owners are Vivendi a French company (they definitely own the Canal Plus TV business). Also own Universal but I believe Canal Plus is separate. Given all Vivendi financial troubles may be up for sale.

I was just wondering whether 'Colditz' was in 1:66:1,or fullscreen ?.

Personally, I think that's more of a blessing than a curse - the French have always had a rather stronger track record both in terms of treating great films seriously and presenting them on DVD properly! There aren't too many UK distributors I'd favour over Studio Canal, whose discs are usually good as a minimum and often outstanding.
By contrast, we can't even look after the negatives of Ealing comedies - which were destroyed in a fire in a British lab a few years ago.

But minus subtitles in this case, which is not a proper presentation. A shame as, as someone pointed out above, a lot of older people would probably enjoy these films, including some like my father who got his hearing wrecked actually fighting in the war!
(The BBC are doing the same thing with their sitcom releases. It's not good enough I'm afraid.)

...ahh... adding subtitles costs money...
...and - pace Michael Brooke - as good as French DVDs are, on average (waaay better, in my experience, than German DVDs, on average, especially with older films!), they are awful about subtitles (I'm talking French [HoH] subs for French movies) - I'd hate to be a hearing-impaired Frenchman eager to see current and older French movies on DVD...
. . . :o . . .

Napoleon,
I'm pleased to report that "The Colditz Story" is 1.66:1 and anamorphic.

Adding subtitles
I have be told it take one and half day work for one person to add 30 minutes of subtitles.
So assuming there is 4 films in a package and they could pay one person five weeks wages to subtitled the movies packages. It shouldn't cost more than 2 grand for the wages.
I wonder how many sales they lose due to no subtitles. Say they sell 20,000 films and that is only 10p for every DVD.
Tight fisted idoits.
