Question:
Just reading at the ever reliable Digital Bits (www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html) that the recently delayed Region 1 release of Ed Wood is to get a Special Edition. Most likely early 2003, because Burton wants to add more content. This can only be good news, it's a fantastic film, and hopefully a commentary track to hear what Burton has to say about it. Although Burtons commentary tracks aren't exactly brimming with madness, it would still be nice. And if all else fails, we all need to get to sleep somehow. It was originally supposed to get a Vista Series release, but that was cancelled for some reason (possibly due to Burton not getting involved). But he's on board now apparently, so excellent news, I don't mind the wait now.
yep - sounds good to me, although I suppose hardly unexpected. I guess it was fairly obv that an SE was due once we learned that the release was pp'd.
Bring it on!
yeah, cant wait.
who was it that got a leaked copy recently ?
that has got to be one valuable DVD.
I was lucky enough to get a copy of ED WOOD and it already contains a commentary track with Tim Burton and others, plus quite a lot of extras.
Sounds bad to me!
I was wanting the film next month -not waiting until next year for some garbage extras (the September release was already extras full).
Curioser and curioser - R2 Ed Wood is up for pre-order at Play (http://www.playserver3.com/Play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=106033)
Ed Wood R1 was distributed to vendors in America, had a significant number of extras and was being sold at a low (resonable) price.
The release was not stopped, just because Tim Burton said he wanted to have more involvement in the release - it just doesn't make sense. Why would Disney go to the expense of recalling already manufactured product on a (I hate to say this) marginally popular film just because the director wanted to put more supplements on? It would never happen. Besides, Ed Wood would be an ideal candidate for the studio revisiting as a Vista Series in a year or two's time.
I suspect that the release was pulled for legal reasons. The fact that the disc is now rumoured to be released sometime in December supports this - it is after all quite soon after the original release date, and not really enough time to create and edit new extras.
I think the R2 release will have sound muted on the commentary, as will the revised R1 release, to stop a possible Slander case - or something similar.
It does probably make more sense that legal reasons were behind pulling this disc off shelves.
Does anyone have any idea what the legal reasons behind pulling this release were?
- Audio commentary from director Tim Burton
- Music video
- 'The Theremin' featurette
- 'When Carol Met Larry' featurette
- 'Pie Plates Over Hollywood' featurette
- 'Let's Shoot This' featurette
- Original theatrical trailer
- Interactive menu
- Scene access
these are the extras listed at Play for the R2 released this week.
Should I buy this or wait for the possibly better R1?
From another thread, the original R1 (confirmed as on the disc)features were:
- "Making Bela" Make-Up Featurette
- Production Design Feature - "Pie Plates Over Hollywood"
- Behind-The-Scenes: "Let's Shoot This F#*%@r!"
- "The Theremin" Documentary
- "When Carol Met Larry" Cross-Dressing Introspective
- Audio Commentary with Cast and Filmmakers
- Music Video
- theatrical trailer
the only missing extra on r2 seems to be the Make-up featurette.
Richie, the Making Bela featurette is on the R2 release - along with all the other promised R1 extras.
oh fab!
So there's really no need to wait for R1 then (if the problem was indeed just a legal one?) - I can't really see there being much else to add to this? BV made "The Others" a 'collector's edition' with considerably less extras than Ed Wood.
Let's just say I can't see a company like Disney (who have recently sent a memo to office staff to reduce the number of paperclips they use!) going to all the expense of a pressing, distribution and recall of thousands of DVDs just becuase the director of a critically acclaimed film (but box office disaster) decides to add some extra content. They refused the Henson Company's requests to release the Disney Muppet Movies in Widescreen.
I'll let you make your own minds up as to which rumour you choose to believe*
* this disclaimer is my 'get out of jail free card' should a vista series turn up in the next year or so. :)
Got my copies this morning - an excellent disc and well worth the £12.
that's one R2 on the way to me then!
I've got mine heading over as well. I think it's still a toss-up between Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands for the accolade of Burton's best film, so obviously I'm more than delighted to finally get hold of this.
I'll natrually flog it on E-Bay if the R1 does turn out to be a souped-up extras-laden version, but for the reasons given on this thread, I'm not holding my breath!
