Men In Black 2
Question:

The phrase 'if you enjoyed the first movie, you'll enjoy this one' has probably never been more appropriate.....
Exactly what you'd expect, the film delivers a lot of laughs and nice set pieces and is notable for the film debut of Forum Favourite Johnny Knoxville. Have to say, for the first hour of the film I was really enjoying it and had a huge grin on my face (especially for Frank the Dog) but the last half hour somehow felt a bit of a let down. All felt a bit rushed and a tad 'too easy'.
Anyway - I'm sure most people will enjoy it for the cheesy summer fun it is.....and Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith do spark off each other really well.
So - what did you guys think of it.......?

Answers:

Have to agree with you. Great no-brainer, just enjoy the ride! Some funny and original ideas, not much of a plot but who cares!

Answers:

Yup - not too taxing - MIIB: Does what it says on the tin...

Agent ‘J’ (Will Smith) is running through partners like there’s no tomorrow..in the meantime an evil alien shrubbery with tentacles (Lara Flynn Boyle) arrives on the planet looking for “the light”, the whereabouts of which is locked in the brain of a postal worker Kevin Brown, better known as ex-MIB agent ‘K’ (Tommy Lee Jones)..
I liked the first movie, I thought Barry Sonnenfeld did a good job balancing the humour and action, and Will Smiths complete confusion at the reality of alien beings on earth, whom we of course identified with. Unfortunately it doesn’t work second time around. It’s basically a remake of the first movie and rather than take it into realms fresh, its all pretty stale stuff. Some scenes could have been set in outer space, on an alien planet, further into the future, used time travel, alternative dimensions..instead Agent J reunites with Agent K and kicks some alien ass on earth. Same as the first movie. OK they are there to protect the earth from the scum of the universe but they could have at least expanded the horizons beyond this fantasy NYC.
It’s a no-brainer writ large..but it’s also not very funny. It gets its best mileage from Tommy Lee Jones not believing Will Smith and being brought to MIB headquarters, and the talking dog and worms.. Lara Flynn Boyles ‘Serleena’ is very nice to look at but her alien just goes through the evil motions, and that 2 headed chap was pretty poor (Johnny Knoxville). None of the CGI stands out.. some is bad, nothing amazes. Danny Elfman contributes another fine score, same “Mars Attack-esque” theme of course.
In closing, it doesn’t outstay its welcome at 88 minutes but you leave the cinema simply thinking “that wasn’t very good really”. But in its defence I would say that its humour would go down better with a few ales on DVD, sober it just doesn’t amount to much. 5/10

By the way, can anyone explain what the last shot was about (managed to miss the point of it somehow)....in spoilers of course!

Answers:

Last shot..
Supposed to show that our world can be viewed through a locker in an alien train station, like the little aliens - similar to 'aliens playing marbles' shot at end of original

I thought it was dreadful:mad: . Liked the first film but this is essentially a lazy inferior version. The only good thing in it was the worm guys. Someone should have told Mr Sonnenfield that in order to do a comedy you have to have some jokes! Its another case of hollywood cashing in.
Thought Johnny Knoxville was also underused and the 'hilarious' idea of him having two heads is just not funny. Plus his character disappered halfway through without any explanation.
If you want to see a comedy film then go and see Austin Powers instead;)

IMO, Frank stole the show :)

I watched about 5 minutes of the first Austin Powers movie and hated it, so I am not going to watch the thrid one (I hear there is going to be a number 4 now). I did like Men in Black 2 and will be buying this on dvd.

A good enjoyable film. Its one of those where the characters rather than the script make the film.
And the bit about the guys mother and the cheese and her palsy - very funny!

well I went to see this on saturday with a mate and I thought it just OK.
I was never a big fan of the first film either but my friend wanted to see MIB 2 and asked me to go so i just decided to tag along.
Frank was the only thing I found remotely amusing, a lot of the jokes I thought were very poor and Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones just seemed to be going through the motions so to speak. They didn't even seem to be trying.
Not even a rental for me never mind a purchase......

MIB2 was a waste of both my time ( thank god it was a short film ) and my money. The only people that enjoyed it who went with me were my two young children.
How can drivel like this get to the movie screens. All it is for is a cash-in on the popularity of the original film:mad:

Well SHMBO dragged me along to see this on Saturday and I have to report i came out of it plesantly suprised. I was never a big fan of the first and expected this to be the same, but something about it just seemed to click. Yes it was predictable in the most and yes the effects had some ropey moments, (especially Knoxvilles' second head).
Like others have said, it's just one big popcorn movie. It never tries to be any more than that and is better because of it.
Would probably give it 7/10 in a review.

Well I hated the original film, but thought this sequel was much better. The first was dull and didn't use the ideas as well as it could have. The second is short and to the point, and makes sure that everything in the original that worked (was funny, interesting) is not only in this movie, but we see more of them. For instance - more worms; more aliens; we see and hear more of the dog; K's re-initiation is basically a better retelling of J's original initiation into MIB. Jonny Knoxville is excellent; that guy from the original who loves all things sci-fi is back and very funny; there's a funny running joke about lockers and Lara Flynn Boyle is better looking than Linda Fiorantino.
It's not a fantastic sequel, but it's better than the original. 3/5

It's watchable, not really much better than Scooby-Doo though and way down the table of must-see summer entertainment.
There are some very funny bits but there's an awful lot of comic material that just doesn't work. I saw it in a packed cinema with a very mixed audience - kids, teenagers, adults - and there were long, uncomfortable stretches where everyone just sat there fidgeting. Take the whole video store sequence - obviously an attempt at offbeat humour but falls utterly flat with barely a chuckle.
There's far too much reliance on plot and on special effects this time. The charm of the first one was that the plot and the effects barely mattered and were just thrown away for laughs. The effects are fine but it's getting to a point where you'd like to see the occasional blockbuster that isn't a wall to wall CGI show. The plot is more or less a repeat of the first one's but this time taken more seriously. Jesus, Tommy Lee Jones actually seems to think he's acting in some of the later scenes.
Jones is actually quite a downer in this. He seems quite unhappy rather than his usual gruff self. Will Smith does his usual street-cool-but-kid-friendly act but it's getting old and he's proved he's capable of much more than this.
The best bits are throwaways, with little to do with the rest of the film: Frank the talking dog, the worm aliens, the inhabitants of the locker. Shame there wasn't more like this.
The summer quality ranking so far -
1. Minority Report
2. Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron
3. Spider-Man
4. Austin Powers in Goldmember
5. Star Wars Episode II
6. Unfaithful
7. Bad Company
8. Men In Black II
9. Scooby-Doo
Not ranked: films about talking mice or Steve Irwin.

I like this summer rating thing! ;)
Mine would be:
1) Minority Report
2) Austin Powers 3
3) Spideman
4) MIB II
5) AOTC

Answers:

hmm I think I would go with
1) AOTC
2) Resident Evil
3) Austin Powers 3
4) Spiderman
5) MIIB
6) Minority Report
What bugged me with MIIB was that the whole story of why the light was wanted by LFB didn't seem to be addressed and also why the light would explode if it did not leave earth
Johnny Knoxville was funny as was J's partner at the start
(whoops hope none saw that, Thanks Dan Druff)

Is it just me or did anybody else think that the CGI was some of the worst since The Mummy Returns?
I heard that this cost approx $140m to put together.
Where did they spend all the cash as the whole thing looks cheap.
Overall a bit of a stinker:(

Agree with other comments... Pure popcorn stuff, just more of the same and to be honest, all the best gags were in the trailer.
Not too bad if you've got a couple of hours to kill.

Good 88 minutes fun. Go into it with no expectations and you wont be disappointed.
They missed a few tricks they could have developed a bit more; locker stuff, post office, finger in the sky etc but overall not too bad. The SFX weren't THAT bad.
Ol' Blue Eyes - Did you recognize someone in the video store?;)

I must say I was extremely disapointed by MIIB. I really enjoyed the first and although all the reviews lead me to believe MIIB would be poor, I still forked out the cash.
The first 20 minutes appear to be "lost" and have no continuity whatsoever. Sure, the Smith and Jones comic duo still spark off each other and Frank and the worms are mildly amusing but ultimately it was a disapointing movie and not one I'd recommend. 4/10
