Are R2 and R4 compatible?
Question:

What I mean is, do R4s play in non multi-region R2 players?
It's actually one disc in particular I was wondering about -- will the R4 Dalek movies disc play on a non-hacked machine over here, does anyone know?
Cheers.

Answers:

If it dual encoded to r2 and r4 then yes.

Answers:

Some discs are dual encoded for R2/R4 but not all.
According to MichaelDVD (http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Discs/Disc.asp?ID=2276) teh Dr Who disc is R4 only.

The best way to make an educated guess is to see who the distributor is. If it's a Hollywood major or the BBC, i.e. someone releasing the film both in the UK/Ireland and Australia/New Zealand, then the disc is very likely to be dual-encoded R2 and R4.
Local companies who release major-studio films (e.g. Roadshow, Universal Australia) usually encode their discs for Region 4 only.
Local independent companies - e.g. Magna Pacific, Shock, Kaleidoscope, Madman, the AV Channel - usually release R0 discs, despite the cases often saying "Region 4".
There are exceptions to the above, for example:
Fox's edition of <i>The Wogboy</i> is R4 only, but I can't imagine that film having much of a market outside Australia!
Magna Pacific's DVDs of <i>Heaven's Burning</i> and <i>Scarfies</i> are R4 only.
...but the above guidelines hold true for most cases.

This is because in Aus was released by Universal but R2 in UK has just been released by Warner (for Studio Canal).
Most dual encoded disks are where same company like Columbia, Disney or Warner has rights in both UK and Aus, as cheaper to do just one version.
One warning is many Warner titles in Aus are released by Village Roadshow whose disks are R4 only (like uncut Matrix)

use the forementioned michaeldvd - cracking site.
I recently got Waiting for Guffman from down under, its NTSC so its coded R4 and R1, but has a proper case, unlike the region 1 snapper.

According to MichaelDVD (http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Discs/Disc.asp?ID=2276) teh Dr Who disc is R4 only. and, in my experience, michaeldvd is 100% accurate. So, visit his website before you buy.
Or get your player modified like 70% of the rest of the population; the money you will save from buying Aussie discs rather than UK releases will pay for the modification after only a few purchases.
