Don't Look Now
Question:

I see that this, at long last, is available in a R2 UK version. Anyone got it, seen it? What's the picture/sound quality like?

Answers:

Got it yesterday.
Looks the best I've ever seen - nice anamorphic pic!
The audio isn't so great but it's in the original mono.
other threads on this film here and here
get it!

Assuming the transfer is identical to the one on my French copy - and there's absolutely no reason to assume otherwise, given the Studio Canal logo on both editions - it looks terrific: conspicuously better than the new print that did the rounds last year!

Answers:

I'll third that; it's wonderful. Just check out the trailer on the disk to see just how wonderful the transfer is. The featurette is quite good too.

It's been dropped to a 15? Interesting.
Well I suppose there's nothing really graphic on display. It is very eerie, but if films can be classified by their atmosphere and their emotional power rather than what's on screen then Jaws should be an 18:)

The original The Vanishing was only a 12 on its first release, and when people actually complained to the BBFC about this a spokesman said that adults would almost certainly find it far more disturbing than children, who wouldn't realise the implications of what was happening.
As for Don't Look Now, I initially raised an eyebrow at the new classification - and then thought "why not?" Apart from one very brief (if unforgettable!) moment there's no graphic violence, and while there is of course a mindblowing sex scene, it's exactly the type of sex scene that the BBFC would approve of - i.e. entirely justified by the plot (one of the reasons for its potency is that it feels so emotionally right) and within the context of a loving marriage.
I can't see Performance being downgraded to a 15, though!

Michael - you mention "Performance". Have you heard something about a DVD release?

DVD Review gives the pic quality only **, are they being a bit harsh?
Ah well, want this..ordered.

Review being written as I write this. It looks incredibly good. The film is, of course, even better than everyone says it is.

Mike - what do you make of the audio?
Sounds quite distorted to me

Answers:

Well it certainly wasn't the Dolby 2.0 Surround that the case claims but it seemed OK otherwise. However, the music could have sounded better - any louder cues and certainly the final cue on the barge sounded a bit distorted.
Dialogue did seem to be a bit muted in the overall sound mix but that's the same on my two VHS copies and was noticable in the version I saw in the cinema last year.

I had the French disc and I thought the sound was quite harsh and a bit distorted. I was hoping that they'd do something about it for the UK release but from your description it sounds like they haven't.

I suspect they can't - some of the dialogue (from the bits I've watched so far) sounds a little harsh, but I suspect that's down to the recording. It sounds to me as if it was recorded "live" on location, rather than post-synched, hence the occasional roughness. Also, nothing I've heard so far has been in anything other than mono - the only bit that's actually in Dolby Surround is the Canal Plus logo at the beginning!

You're probably right about the dialogue being recorded 'live', but surely the music shouldn't sound harsh and distorted?
