Question:
Well seeing how I've become a fan of Paul Anderson's, I've decided to pick up his directorial debut, which he also it appears wrote, called Shopping. It's also a big screen debut for Jude Law who costars with Sadie Frost, now his wife with whom he lives together in London.
Shopping is small budgeted AND British, that means it's been done for cheaper than Bruce Willis' SUV, but Paul Anderson brings to it the expected style and flare. This movie really delivers, it's beautiful, car chases are compelling and well executed, and the movie is driven forward with an awesome mix of music by the likes of Orbital and a bunch of unknown bands to me which I intend to seek out.
Jude Law plays an adrenaline junkie who's just got out of jail, again, serving 3 months, and knows that next time will be a while longer, yet his small industrial city and pals is all he knows, he steals cars, crashes into shopping windows just so that the cops would chase him, loses them easily, and trashes the car. He probably knows it's not gona end well, but yet he does nothing about it, even though his girlfriend starts getting tired of it and begs him to leave this life and go away with her.
There isn't much to the plot but there is more substance, it's visually entertaining, very degrading and basically doesn't give a damn being politically correct, kids dying in car crashes or anything else. I recommend it to fans of movies like Escape from NY, Hardware, and Soldier.
P.S. Cover of the dvd lists Jonathan Price as the third major player but he just isn't. I hoped he was one of the baddies Law's character brushes up against but he's a "good" cop and is only on screen for about 5 mins. Other sort of cameo appearances are the young Sean Bean, Sean Pertwee (who was also good in Anderson's Soldier), and Jason Isaacs.
Did anyone else see this film?
Now I can truly say I like all of Anderson's movies, except for his TV release, the Sight, which isn't out on any media.

Are you on crack, mate?

Interesting film menstion, thanks.
I like Anderson's films as well, Event Horizon, Soldier, Resident Evil, even liked Mortal Kombat, all entertaining, nothing to win oscars, but enjoyable hours of entertainment, simple, but effective, and thats why Anderson does a decent job, even though I admit there are better directors easily, Anderson does seem to please certain fans.
:smokin:
just sitting watching Res Evil the 2nd time, didnt even get half way through ... how annoying is that Michelle Rodriguez in it  (i enjoyed it first time too)
but I do like Event Horizon and Mortal Kombat, Soldier wasnt that bad either.
Shopping is a good film, saw it at the cinema when it first came out, not brilliant but entertaining and the OST cd is worth buying assuming its still available.
Event Horizon, a huge space ship and they visit fewer rooms on board than exist on the salvage ship !!! Could have been a lot better
saw this years ago and really enjoyed it
I remember how good the DS surround track was on video
Please say the DVD is in 5.1!!!!
Loved this film when it came out. Unfortuately the R1 dvd has had some seemingly random edits (about 10 minutes or so) applied so is missing some of the most important scenes - avoid it and stick with the VHS until a decent version is released.
The soundtrack cd has been deleted for a couple of years now but it is indeed top notch.
I had the pleasure of going to the British premiere of this at the 'Shots In The Dark' film festival in Nottingham back in the early nineties.
I really enjoyed this film too.
Sean Pertwee (son of famous dad) was there with Paul to answer questions afterwards.
Both came across as intelligent, thoughtful and interesting people.
I was hoping for great things from PA in the future, but was very disapointed with Event Horizon, had great potential, but just came across as a mix between Hellraiser and Alien. Sam Neill just about saves it from becoming self-parody imho.
I'm going to be watching Resident Evil this evening, I hope this is better.
Ugh Resident Evil
Not a good movie
I much prefered Event Horizon

No it's in 2.0 surround.
Also at first I thought it was pan&scammed, but it's about 1.66:1, is that the original aspect ratio?
I didn't have to know the dvd was edited, and by TEN whole minutes, that sucks.
I had a nightmare that i bought Event Horizon the other night  Sorry but this thread reminded me:confused:
