Question:
As far as I can find out there are three version of this DVD being released
E.T. - The Full Screen Collector's Edition
E.T. - The Widescreen Collector's Edition
E.T. - The Ultimtate Collector's Gift Set
Well, the first one can just be ignored, the second appears to have all the extras and the third has the two versions of the film plus the CD, script & senitype.
This is the part where I need the help, Do I have to buy two versions of this DVD if I want both films and all the extras?
Are they taking the P*$$?
E.T. - The Fullcreen / Widescreen Collector's Edition is a 2 disc set: the new 2002 version of the movie & a disc of extras
E.T. - The Ultimate Collector's Gift Set contains all of the above, plus the cd, senitype, script book, & a third disc containing the original 1982 cut of the film.
They are not selling the 1982 cut seperately.
To add insult to injury, the fantastic documentary from the laserdisc boxset has been ignored completely, and some of the video based extras, including a few deleted scenes, will not be on the disc, but only accessable via Universal's Total Axcess web port.
The packaging on all three editions looks fairly cheesy IMO.

Just to make sure I am 110% sure about this, the widescreen collector's edition does not include the 1982 version of the film and the Collector's gift set does not include the extras.
Is this right?

No - the ultimate collectors set has everything. If you get that, the only thing you're missing is the pan and scan version of the film.

Personally I'm just going to wait until I can get the original cut at a sensible price, and if that never happens then I will never buy i.
Apart from the docu, what else isn't on the dvd that was on the laserdisc?
OK, on play the "standard" widescreen collectors edition release is listed as limited edition, does anyone know if the ultimate collectors set will include this?
Not that the words limited edition mean anything more to me (cough) but I'm just curious...

Limited Edition actually means something with the ET releases.
They are all (inc. ultimate set) going to be discontinued on the 31st December 2002.
.. and if they sell by the truckload do you think they will be discontinued? I'm somewhat sceptical.
Who saw the "new" version.
I would really like the 1982 version in preference obviously.
However, I don't want to pay for a load of crap and some huge box.
If I just bought the new version how much of a heracy would I find it?
And in the UK it appears you can't get the original film *at all* on DVD. Blackstar have a 2 disc ET for pre-order - and dispite being listed as ET (1982) I expect it is the 2002 release (like the 2 disc R1 sets).
There is no other ET release listed on Blackstar at this time.
Apparently region 2 is only getting New version of the film. I prefer the original without the New CGI. So i won`t be getting it as i only have a R2 Toshiba player.

So much for Speilberg assurances that the original version would be avilable on DVD. He obviously doesn't care about the rest of the world.
I can't understand how E.T. - a film which should have been *THE* DVD release of 2002 has been handled so badly by Universal and Spielberg.
It's almost as if they want this release to fail - everything from the limited availability window to total axess for deleted scenes and trailer screams 'bad decision'.
