DTS/Receivers help.
Question:

Hi
I have the Acoustic Solutions DS533 5.1 package and am very pleased with but have now decided to go for dts am I right in thinking by buying one of these http://www.richersounds.com/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=300813-ES
http://www.richersounds.com/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=300498
from Richer sound I could have dts? As you can probably tell my knowledge on this type of stuff is virtually non-existent and any help would me much appreciated
thanks.
and can you play dts-es discs on a dts 5.1 system

Answers:

the jvc one does dts. not to sure about the other one, so yes you will be fine with that one, and you should be able to use your speakers from the acoustic soloution package, and of course your dvd player.....
dts-es i believe is used in a 6.1 system and is a rear centre speaker..

Answers:

glynndenniss
Thanks for your help I think I will go for that
cheers.

Answers:

As you already have DD 5.1 don't waste money buying something else just to get DTS.If you are going to upgrade, make it worthwhile. The current Yamaha amps, and others that are under £400 all have DD-EX,DTS-ES and Pro-logic 2.Don't upgrade until you can afford to get these now common sound systems, because if you buy DTS now,you will want to upgrade again in no time. And on a budget system you will probably not notice the improvement from DD on DTS.
With the correct amp and the additional rear centre speaker you could have 6.1 sound from any 5.1 soundtrack.
But you can play 6.1 on a 5.1 sound system no problem aswell

Answers:

I would not consider a Panasonic AV amp; nor a refurbed amp from RS (probably missing remote & manual)
Most have been repaired for some reason. Do you really want something that's been repaired? - possibly could fail earlier than a brand new fully working model?

Answers:

Thanks for your help guys I will have to think about this and look at my budget again
cheers.

Answers:

i would have to agree with the ppl above, if you can push your budget up a bit id go for either the yamaha 430
http://www.richersounds.co.uk/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=206385
or the marantz sr4300
http://www.richersounds.co.uk/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=300197

Answers:

glynndenniss thanks for the suggestions
I went to richer sounds a few days ago and the guy who worked there had good things to say about this one http://www.richersounds.co.uk/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=301436 but that one has no 6.1 I think I can strech to about £200
thanks.

Anyone have any good links to cheap dts Receivers apart from Richer Sounds?
thanks.:)

Answers:

RS are the cheapest around; checkout previous line Yamaha AV Receiver's
You could try this guy..:D

What about a second hand AV amp? You'll be able to get a higher quality unit for the same money; rather than a budget new model.

I do like the look of the Yamaha HTR5540RDS at empire direct but will my speakers be ok for something like this? again thanks for the links.

Take a look at this (http://www.qed-uk.com/?i=0-iZpy2W-tR6&vp=6&bg=212&bp=250s&bi=0)
Specification (http://www.eltax.com/products/salg.php?varenr=11007&serienavn=AVR-250&serienavn2=avr-250&type=AV-Receiver&item=AVR-250&farve=Silver&farve2=silver&produktnavn=AVR-250)

Answers:

Thanks guys that ELTAX AVR250 seems like a real bargain cheers.

Answers:

If i was you, i'd spend that little bit extra and go for a good quality name, you cant go wrong with a yamaha, and it will blow that eltax out of the water, your speakers should be fine with it, and you can always buy some new ones later when you get more money....as i did.

Answers:

Second glynndenniss; Eltax are poor quality. You don't want to skimp on the amp.. better to fork out another £50-£100 and get a proper QUALITY amp, ie Yamaha.

Answers:

I would not make a blanket statement to say Eltax are a poor quality without providing evidence. I do not have this amp but I have heard it on DTS setting and it is a budget amp with provides 60w per channel. It is not as good as my Sony but I paid twice the price! For somebody who has a limited budget and does not want to enter the 'specification creep' stage, the Eltax amp is fine. I do have an Eltax 5.1 speaker package and I think they are excellent.

Answers:

HI
I think I might go for a Yamaha as you all seem to speak highly of them in terms of quality I see theres this one http://www.qed-uk.com/?i=0-jaP43MU3zM&vp=6&bg=212&bp=5630s&bi=0 for £159 but can't find out the Features so will try looking on the net. Could still be tempted by the cheap Eltax one anyone else have any opinions on it?
Thanks

Answers:

You said it yourself! Really fork out the bit more.. a AV amp has a pre-amp, processing (Pro-Logic, DD/DTS decoding), video switching, remote, poweramp stages, power supply, casing, profit margin, etc. Can you really expect something that's CHEAP to have good quality parts for that a low price?
Could still be tempted by thecheap Eltax one anyone else have any opinions on it?
Thanks

Jelly Baby
Your are right I think what jayok said made me reconsider but in the long run Im best to fork out more now rather than upgradeing again in 5 months. At the moment ideally I would like to spend up to £180 and would like a silver one. Think I will go for this one http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetails/YAM-HTR5540RDS.htm but is Titanium sort of silvery?
thanks.

Answers:

IHATELIFE...go for the yamaha, you will be thanking yourself for doing it when you get it home, if you buy the Eltax you will always be thinking..." i wonder what that yamaha sounded like, should i have paid the few extra quid for it"......and the simple answer is........yes you should have....

Answers:

I decided to go for the Yamaha RXV430RDS http://www.richersounds.co.uk/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=206385
phoned up Richer sounds to see if they have one in stock? Then they say no more left and no more coming in . Will check empiredirect.co.uk again.

Answers:

The 430RDS doesn't do discrete 6.1 unless I'm very much mistaken: it will do DD5.1EX and DTS-ESmatrix (ie it fakes the rear centre channel)
The 440RDS and the silver equivalent will do discrete DTS-ES and DTS-neo6 (like prologic2).
The 440 and the Marantz sr4300 are supposed to be very similar with the yamaha being slightly better at films and the Marantz being slightly better at music

Answers:

the marantz sr4300 is in the same group as the yamaha 630....not the 440

Thanks for all your help but one thing will I be able to plug my existing sub from my Acoustic Solutions DS533 5.1 package into this?
thanks.
This is the one where the sub is combined with the 5.1 decoder and amplifier. I would be surprised if you can connect the sub to the Yamaha. You do not need the DS533 decoding / amplifing capabilities now but unfortunately it appears that you will need a separate sub if you want the .1 for DTS tracks. I would sell the DS533 set-up and buy a 5.1 speaker package otherwise cancel your Yamaha and keep the DS533 and live without DTS.
