Question:
Have read on here that the schneider 857 will not playback R1 discs via RGB ? Was going to recomend my mate gets oneof these but seen as he will be buying mostly R1's - not much point!
Are there any owners of either the Pacific 1002 or the Cyberhome from WH Smiths that can confirm if these players have the same issue or not ?
Thanks..
The Yamada players don't have this problem.
There is one for £39.99 delivered on amazon.co.uk website. They are multiregion and play all the popular formats without any niggles ;)
The Pacific 1002 supposedly has the same internals as the Schneider 857 ,so would have the same problem (though i hadn't read of this fault ).
cheers for the reply. the schneider problem was mentioned in another thread somewhere round here...
Anyone else have any of these players and can confirm the issue or not ???
I've got the Schneider, and I can confirm the problem. When playing NTSC discs via RGB, you get an effect rather like macrovision, with streaks of colour across the screen from time to time. The streaks don't appear through the SVideo output, but there's a quite dramatic drop in detail using it.
I think I may be returning it to Asda, and I'll try a Pacific. It's a shame, as otherwise it's a remarkably good player - and handles pretty much every disc I've tried in it, and the 5.1 output is pretty good too. And it's got lovely blue glowy bits.
Thanks - if you get the pacific to try can you confirm if it suffers the same problem...
Your wish is my command :D
I've had my Schneider swapped - with no argument and profuse apologies - for a Pacific. I'm not sure which model it is, it's the one that costs £47, is silver on top and black on the bottom, and has been beaten with the ugly stick.
It loses the 5.1 decoder (and blue glowy bits), but has the same region hack, and uses the same remote as the Schneider, so I don't have to reprogram my universal remote (brilliant!).
The bit you're waiting for - I can happily confirm it DOESN'T have the same NTSC problem. R1 (namely Two Towers) plays beautifully through the RGB output, with nay a streak nor distortion to be seen.
So far, it plays everything the Schneider did (and the Schneider played everything except DIVX), so I'm happy again.
Thankyou Mr Synner - looks like its a pacfic then.
Hold your horses! I've just been watching Daredevil, now the player has warmed up a bit and - streak city. Yep, the Pacific DOES have the same fault, I'm sad to report.
Guess I'm going back to Asda again
NOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH :(
maybe the cyberhome that goes back on sale at W H Smiths for 49.99 on Tuesday will do the trick - looks like that might be my first port of call..
thanks for the update
cant understand why this problem hasn't been highlighted in any of the reviews etc...
I've only had a quick tinker, but the problem only seems to appear on certain discs.
So far, I've tried the R1 versions of the following:
Daredevil - bold streaks across the screen
Solaris - faint streaks
Adaptation - faint streaks
Buckaroo Banzai - no streaks.
Two Towers - no streaks
Weird. The upside is the Svideo output (which doesn't feature the streaks) is dramatically better than the Schneider one.
So, is the WH Smiths Cyberhome player any cop?
no idea. tried!-- answer 1-->Synner's new DVD player - take 3
The Pacific has been returned, and the refund chucked at Mr WH Smith in return for one of his unbelievably cute Cyberhome 400 players cum paperweights.
I've tried it with all the afflicted discs, and can safely report - very faint streaks, and now with added horizontal shimmy. :brickwall :suspect:
The Cyberhome has very similar menus to the previous two players, so I'd guess there's a compatibility problem between the video circuit used in these players and my Toshiba TV. So, if you've got a Tosh telly, avoid the supermarket budget players.
However, the sheer cuteness of the Cyberhome, combined with it's amazingly good SVideo output has won me over. I can live with SVideo for R1 until my dream player is finally released.
There must be someone out there working on a DVD recorder that uses + and -, has a built-in HD, a freeview digital tuner, a digital INPUT and can play DVD-Audio and SACD, and is multi-region. Please? :help:
so out of the 3 you would recomend the cyberhome ?
I certainly do - the picture quality on the cyberhome is streets ahead of the other two, and it also seems to be put together better.
And it's just so tiny!
Had one of these little cyberhome players but had to take it back to whsmith at the weekend. Mp3/Audio cd's had severe bass distortion problems after 3 weeks of use.
Apart from this it was a superb bit of kit and from all the posts on the cyberhome on the forums, I am only the 3rd to have this problem.

You sure the problems is not with your TV, what TV are you using?

I'm beginning to think it may be the set - although it's quite happy with my old Dansai and even older Toshiba 2109 players connected via the same cables, playing the same discs. And the Cyberhome works fine on another set.
The TV is a Toshiba 32mw7db, which is about 5 years old now.
