Question:
I belong to one of those dvd hire clubs (viewdvd) and one of the discs they've sent me doesnt play properly which I think is due to all the marking on the disc.
Can someone tell me the best way to try and clean the dvd so it will play?
Well, if it is scratched and those scratches are the problem, any amount of cleaning won't make any difference. I'd ask for a credit / refund.
I've had problems with Silence of the Lambs, which was just discoloured, and Lethal Weapon 3 which looked to have scratches, strange patterns and other mess all over it.
After reading about the technicolor problem, one suggestion was a small amount of washing up liquid rubbed onto the surface then wiped clean...and in both cases the disk went from a mess to perfectly clean and playable! Worth a try!
I just likely rub it with a duster.
Don't forget to wipe from the centre outwards in a series of straight lines. Not in a circular motion as with a vinyl LP.

Anyway toothpaste & a soft cloth
I've got a dvd lens cleaner for sale here if you're interested. :)
EDIT
Sorry now sold.

Are you not thinking of a lens cleaner which has to rotate in order to clean the lens in the player ? That's a bit of a "black art" in itself IMO. Laser drives are delicate things and you could end up with a damaged one if it's overdone. Re the toothpaste, I suppose that could be OK if it's not too abrasive. Anyway, as posted before, if the surface is scratched, then bad luck, nothing you can do about it.

Absolutely not true. A mild abrasive can help with even quite bad scratches.:)

they don't - they all work radially. Watch closer when you're using them. CD/DVD players can cope much better with a radial scratch than with one which follows the path they are playing.

For grime and stuff. i found the best stuff is spray spectacle cleaner. I use the one from vision express. It smels like diluted detergent. I guess you could dilute your own detergent but I find this way very convenient.
