Question:
:help:
I have a Sony DAV-S550 compact AV system, the problem i have is that when the case gets hot (Which is normal) the disc starts to stick/ jump/ and generally plays up, the air vents are not blocked (they are on th side of the unit) any advice please its only 3 weeks old. i must admit i have a Sky Digi box sitting on top, would this do this, most of my DVDs are played in DTS but i don,t think that has any thing to do with it, or could it just be the adverse hot weather we are having,(it is out of direct sunlight) Its a bit of a pain because it happens at the good part of the film
(the ending)
Thanks:confused:
Sony dvd players are well known for having dodgy dvd drives. Much of the time in the past it was because they made the drives less copied media friendly to protect Sony's huge interests in film, music and television production. But in doing this they made the drives less reliable for the long term. In your situation I would seek a replacement. The drive will only become worse over time.
There is no company out there that fits worse drives than Sony. Its not that Sony source the worst possible drives in the world its just they don't set them up to be the very best dvd readers by fully optimsing laser power. Check this out;

I've heard it said that Sony dvd players are much better now and the drives fitted are properly optimised but certainly some models sold today still have problems it seems. The Sony 550 started off as a £600 system but now it seems no one is selling them much above £300 and they have gone down to as low as £250 for a plain non multiregion model. To me this is an indication of a model with problems either in reliability or simply people not wanting them. Its not exactly been poorly reviewed either as What Hifi list it as one of the few home cinema all in ones they actually recommend.
rEally not impressed with my Sony 800 which is about 18 months old. First would jump or stick on a lot of cds, had it fixed under warranty, which then caused intermittent loss right rear surround when watching films. Went to the repairers three times and could find nothing wrong and had been fine for 9 months until tonight when it happened again aaahhhhhhhh Sony are not my favourite people at the moment. Cannot offer advice except take it to be replaced/repaired whilst under warranty.
:mad:
I did pop into my local Sony Centre,picked on someone who knows what he is talking about (very hard to find these days).He adviced me to move the Sky box which was standing on top,as they generate a lot of heat, thus the Sony is not only hot on its own accord its drawing a lot of heat from the sky box, in my first query i said it got hot (really hot) but since i moved the sky box it just get warm,which to me tells me something,not only that the sound quality has improved quite a bit, and it has stopped skipping and sticking (this i will monitor over the next few days) so extra heat and strong magnetic field might have a adverse on the sony,hopfully problem solved hope you have better luck with yours, Thanks:wave:
Well thats great news. I thought from your description "when the case gets hot (Which is normal) the disc starts to stick/ jump" we were talking normal temperatures as most home cinema systems run a little hot. Anyway if the moving of sky box has cured all your dvd problems thats great news.
I had a Sony S550 system for a few months this year, but after a string of problems (skipping dvd, poor audio quality, speaker failure, crap FM reception) I finnally gave it to my brother and got set up with an amp, speakers and DVD player.
I've had a few friends who have also had various versions of Sony's cinema in a box kits, and every one has had at least some grumble about them.
Bite the bullet and start to build it from the ground up, I know its more expensive but for only double the original £550 I paid for it at the start of the year I now have KEF Speakers (Eggs, 5.1 kit+additonal 6th centre rear), Yamaha 740 Amp (DTS ES, DTS EX) and Tosh SD330 DVD player, which frankly blows the socks off the S550 to be honest.
Just my opinions mind..:nuts:
