Question:
My brother has a TV which does not support NTSC, so is limited to players which support Pal60 - He finds a forced PAL signal too jerky for R1 and Pal60 is a fair bit smoother.
Can anyone tell me what Pal60 Players exist - preferably a cheapy that supports all formats (DVD-r/VCD etc) ?
the old sammy709 did, I think.
Theres a guy on uk.media.dvd selling one for £30.
I think most players output PAL60 for NTSC sourced material, certainly Pioneers do. PAL50 (true UK PAL signal) for NTSC sourced material is a little more rare and that is what the Sammy does.
Does the TV not accept an RGB signal (via Scart) if so, you can skip this PAL/NTSC thing. :)

Ah, I've got it wrong then :)
He already has a Samsung 709 - but he wants a player that will play DVD-R as well which of course the 709 doesn't. I don't know much about his TV (and he lives 300 miles away so i can't pop around to take a look.)
So he wants a player that will play NTSC at Pal 50 - like the 709, but can also play DVD-R/VCD.
Is there any ?
(btw - dunno about the scart thing - i'll ask him about it)
There are masses of players that convert ntsc to pal 50 and play vcds and dvd-rs. Most of them tend to be cheapish chinese made players. Amazon do a Yamada model for £50 delivered and this is probably his best bet. There's a Proline model from Comet for less than £40. The little Cyberhome CH400 from Wh Smiths for £50. The list goes on and on.
The Pioneer 454 does PAL60 and plays DVD-R for sure.
pioneer and panasonic do PAL 60 (Pal 60 is what you need, not Pal 50) I would recommend the Pioneer 360, £90 quid from amazon multiregion!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Is it PAL60 or PAL50 that i need ?

What exactly is the issue? From your first post it seems like he does not like how jerky things are set to PAL50 (forced PAL you called it) but likes PAL60. If the TV support PAL60 then he can pretty much choose any Pioneer or Panny player (and a few others) as they all support PAL60. If the problem is that the TV only supports PAL50 (normal UK PAL) then he will need a player capable of outputting PAL50 from an NTSC disc. The Sammy he has can do this already, along with PAL60 and NTSC I think. Can you get him to tell you exactly which mode he uses on the Sammy to watch NTSC DVD's and then we will know which you need.
gotcha - Pal 60 it is, cheers guys.
I think the tight bugger should just buy a decent tv.....
All of the JVC range of DVD players convert NTSC to True Pal 50.
THX:)
The wonderful all singing all dancing sammy 709 plays pal 50 or 60..with pal 50 you can make a vhs version because it also removes macrovision:nono:
It also plays dvdr-r .. mines does anyway. Plays vcd but is picky what kind of disc you use.
MY samsung homecinema kit plays pal 50 too , it must be common with samsungs.
Most player output a quasi - pal /pal 60 output do they not?

Why doesn't he use a scart rgb lead to connect anyway. Gives the best picture and will give him a full colour display even with dvd players that don't do pal60 only true ntsc?

If you can find someone who's willing to flash the EPROM chip in your brother's 709, then upgrading to the most recent firmware will allow him to play DVD-Rs.
Tell him to head over to my old site - http://www.709online.com
So thats YOUR site then??
Just my luck..I hunted high and low for months for a aiwa hif fi remote, then 2 days after Ive bought one for a fiver from a car boot sale..you go and post the PROPER hack for it using the sammy remote!
Cheers!
 :D
PS. You cant help me with a hack to play vcds in a bush 2023. The newer versions arent the same as the older ones. Ive got a feeling that this is a rebadged alba 45 cheepo model
