Budget Widescreen 32"
Question:

I'm looking for a budget widescreen to replace my 3 year old Grundig 28" 4:3 which has gone on the blink. The TV has to be a 32" widescreen. I've compiled a short list can anyone help me with selection, I am having difficulty finding any reviews. Is there anything I should stay away from? I would appreciate your opinions
Sanyo 32WN6H-B £449
Toshiba 32W33B £479
Sharp 32JW73H £473
Philips 32PW6006C £490
Samsung WS32V54NS8XXEU £450
LG RI32CZ10 £385
Thomson 32WR25UG £413

Answers:

Sanyo's are pretty poor, Toshiba tend to be very good although geometry can be iffy and there very basic bottom of the range stuff isn't made by them and isn't very good. Sharps are terrible, least reliable set out there. Philips are generally very good but there are a few rogue models out there. Samsungs can be good basic sets. LG have rubbish pictures. 50hz Thomson sets are very good. Of the list I would shortlist the toshiba, philips, samsung and thomson and then search the web/forums/usenet for horror stories and info concerning these sets.

Also worth thinking about a basic Panasonic 50Hz set.
I'd go with Bonz though - Tosh first, then equally Panny and Phillips.

I got the Sharp 32JF73H a few months back (the flat screen version) and it is fantastic - don't believe everything you hear about Sharp. The sound and picture are crystal clear, there are no geometry problems at all, it has a flat screen and 3 scarts.
And it was 20% off in Comet reduced from 600 to 479. I've never regretted it once.
Bargain!

We'll all the reviews I've seen have not been positive and even if the set was as good as you say there is still the issue of the worst reliability record of any tv brand. I'll admit geometry isn't bad on this set but there are so many other issues. Check out this review;

Basically its got rubbish performance and the worst reliability record of any set. The third scart is a a very basic scart with no s-video or rgb and not a lot of use anyway.
Given the choices he has, he can do much better than sharp. I mean if he went for the Sharp you'd be mad not to go for the 5year guarantee because of the poor reliablity. However if he goes for the Thomson he can skip this expense with a very remote chance of it going wrong within the 5 years such is the reliability of them. Only 2 or 3 in 100 suffer reliability problems with their thomson set where as 16 in 100 suffer with sharp. This is from Which's reliability survey of last year. Basically your 8 times more likely to have a lot of hassle with sharp than thomson.
Sharp are abandoning crt television production prematurely in europe because their sets are so bad. The next range of Sharp sets may be rebadge low cost turkish sets or they'll have no range at all.
I just can't see the point in buying into this brand for televisions. They do make superb vcrs and many other great items like lcd tvs though.

I think the Toshiba models that are the same as some Bush models are actually made by Samsung. If you were going to consider one of these sets get it with the Bush name on as it would normally be massively cheaper that way. If you really want a Toshiba I would pay more and get a real Toshiba set.

Anyone seen the Samsung WS32M64VS. This one is supposed to be totally flat.
Looks like I'm down to Thomson or Samsung
