help with connections
Question:

I bought sony DAV s550 and have an old Sony TV (has 2 scarts in the back and SVideo in the front), sony VCR and Sony SKY box. What would be the best way to connect all of them!! so that I can enjoy surround sound with sky, vcr and also TV. Digital point sent a scart3 phono cable with the system and what other cables would I need?. Thanks for the help.

I've no experience of the models (kinda) described... but I'd guess it depends on the connections the DAV offers. IIRC, the s550 has a digital in on the back, so you could connect this to the skybox output. For the VHS deck, you'll either need to loop through the skybox (the out may double as an IN) or to feed it via the composite in (its a yellow phono plug) and the corresponding analogue audio pair (phonos, one red, one white).
Then, depending on the sophistication of the decoding unit, you should be able get surround sound from the Sky box (where supplied) and create a degree of ambience from the VHS deck. Don't expect 5.1 though. Pro-logic maybe....
Anyway, that's your audio pretty much sorted, so you then just need to deliver a picture. You'll probably find that the of the two scarts on the back, one is actually SVIDEO anyway, so you can get a good picture by feeding her direct from the DAV unit. The Sky box can then take the RGB feed (unless the DAV can do RGB, in which case switch them) and the VHS will be fed through the skybox anyway (just put it on EXT-1, or AUX, or AV1 or whatever they call it in the world of Sony.)
If you can't loop through the Sky box, you can always connect the VHS output to the remaining composite ins of the DAV. There should be 3 yellow phono sockets on the back, 2 ins and one out. Use the remaining in one, and the other pair of audio phonos (you know, the other red and white pair that are neither outputs nor have the skybox / VHS box / console whatever) plugged into them.
There. OK. I confused myself a little, and may have just rigged up 2 VHS boxes instead of one, but the principle holds. :)

Ps. When you say 'TV' do you mean analogue as well as sky? In that case, if your TV doesn't have audio outs (red and white phonos) you'll have to use the tuner in the VHS box to do that for you. If it does, you can just plug them into the other other red and whites on the back of the Dav. And whilst you're at it, take the output audio pair to the TV input if its around, cos otherwise you'll get no sound from the VHS deck if the amp isn't on.
Ok. Now I'm done:thumbs:
