2 Centre speakers from 1 output
Question:

I was planing on connecting another centre speaker to my amp, but it only has one set of centre terminals.
Does anyone know the best way of doing this?
Will the power going to each speaker be half the normal power for a specific volume setting?
Is it possible that the amp/speakers will be damaged.
Thanks for looking.:)

Answers:

You might get away with it, although you'd have to double check the impedance of the speakers versus the impedance rating for your amp's centre channels.
I think (and it's only think) that if your amp will accept 4ohm impedance, that would mean you could run two 8 ohm rated speakers from that connection. Whether there would be a noticeable volume decrease I couldn't say.

why would you want to? The idea of the centre speaker is to localise dialogue to the screen - surely a second centre would defeat this?

Answers:

Not if they are both centralised. I would like to have one under the tv, and one above it. A mate of mine has done this, and it seems to give the centre channel a bit of a kick, although he has 2 centre channels on his amp.

My ol' Yamaha amp has 2 sets of terminals for centre speakers.
I guess it depends on how you wire the speakers re resistance.
Paralel - half the resistance
series - add the resistance isnt it?

Yes

I'd say spend the money on a better single centre myself.

True, but sometimes the screen is too tall to put a centre on.

Many a time I've been tempted by having a matching set of fronts flanking the Tosh, cos she looks daft with the centre speaker 5 and a half foot from the ground.
If I put the centre underneath, it'd be about 10 inches from the floor. For the same price as a pair of mission bookshelfs (call it £70), a pair of stands (£30), and their matching centre (£100), I could have installed 4 mission bookshelfs on 4 stands.
The sound would be better integrated, and it would look the nuts.
All IMHO of course. I'd much rather feed a whole wall of cones from mercury troughs..

I did this for a while.
I wired the two centres in series
Amp+><+Centre1-><+Centre2->-Amp
This gives (for 8Ohm speakers) a nominal 16 Ohms impedance.
The alternative wiring in parallel drops the impedance to 4Ohms which means the amp can put a lot of current through. This is dangerous for the amp if you're listening loud. I figured it was better to have the lower current/higher impedance (based on an A/S level in electronics 12 years ago :) )
Both centres were budget (Eltax Symphony and Eltax Stargate). I put the Symphony on the TV and the Stargate below. The sound was better than the sum of the two parts coming 'from' the screen not above or below.
The I got a Tivo and the space below the TV got occupied and I took out the Stargate.
