Bulky B&Ws... what can I change to without spending a fortune?
Question:

Been to my local Sound Academy and drooled at all the lovely, bloody expensive gear the other day. Came across some beautiful M&K kit and rather ugly (IMO) Kef eggs. The salesman told me the M&Ks were expensive but the DB's for performance:
M&K K7s £275 each!! (would need 2 stereos & centre)
M&K K4s £450 a pair!! (would need 4 in total for rear surrounds & centre)
Kef Eggs Mk 2 package (5 satellites & sub) £800 (reasonable)... wouldn't need the sub as I'd keep my M&K one.
I think my current gear sounds excellent for the price and size of average sized room BUT it looks rather dated and is very bulky (especially bread bin on top of telly :gag: )
Here's a list of kit & a link to piccis (http://uk.msnusers.com/GekkoCorporation/homecinemasetup.msnw)
B&W CDMC centre
B&W CDM-SE 2 stereos
B&W DM-601-S2 rear surrounds
B&W VM-1 rear centre
M&K VX-7 Mk II subwoofer
Ideally I want an upgrade or sidewards shift but in a much smaller/neater package but don't want to spend >£500 extra. What would people recommend?

Why not move wholesale to VM1s ... get em wall mounted and save some serious floor-space? You'd obviously need to keep your sub.

I'm not sure whether the VM-1s would perform as well as my current set-up... the CDM range use Kevlar cones and the drivers are much better. May ask for a demo though and if it sounds ok then it's a great idea!

Ask Radiohead - he's swapped to VM1s and rates them highly. I've still got the bulky B&Ws but would consider a swap for something less intrusive.

That will have gone to my work account - so I'll answer here.
I switched from 601S3's and an LCR60S3 centre - loved them to bits but they took up a lot of space on the floor, plus we had a baby on the way so I feared for the drivers in the coming months.
I was initially sceptical about the whole sub-sat thing, and demoed the Gallo Micros first - whilst good I felt they were over-priced for what they were and tried the VM1's. I was very surprised at how good they are, and partnered with a Q150 sub they work well with both music and AV. With music I don't doubt that dedicated stereo speakers would be better but for the money, convenience, performance and looks the VM1's are way more than adequate. For AV they really hit the spot all set to "small" and with the REL taking on all bass duties. The centre speaker isn't ultimately as good as the LCR60S3 but then I wouldn't expect it to be either. Having said that I've yet to watch a film and find fault with it. The weak spot in the VM1 package is the sub but that won't be an issue for you.
However, I doubt that they would compare with the M&K's you've been looking at. Your current set-up is better than my old one, so I don't know if the VM1's would be enough for you with what you have right now. As far as the KEF Eggs go, I felt that the VM1's easily out-performed the Mk1's but I haven't heard the Mk2's.
Hope that helps. It all depends on your expectations really - if you're after the last word in hi-fi and stereo performance then any sub-sat package may disappoint. If you're after a good all-round single system that is compact and looks good then you'll be happy.

Thanks mate. My wife has decided not to waste our money just yet when there's home improvements to be done! :( Our baby's 6 months old now & I fear for the worst if he's in the cinema room... God forbid if one of them fat blocks fell off the stand when he's shaking it!
Will save up & look to getting M&K set one day.... (dream on!) :dork:
