Question:
Hi
After doing a bit of reading about Kef's apparently excellent "eggs" - can anyone give me some first hand experiences with them? I'm considering starting the audio side of my set up from scratch - though will probably just replace the speakers first, then the amp. The current bundle of the MK1 Kefs and sub available for £499 is really tempting.
My current set up is
Front: Mission 703 floor standers
Centre: Mission 73c
Rears: Mission 73
Sub: Paradigm PDR10
Sony STRDB 830 Receiver/amp
Do you think I will get a noticeable improvement in sound quality. I'm no audiophile but from all accounts the Kefs (both MK1 and MK2) are amazing and I am quite drawn to the fact that their size will free up placement of things when I finally manage to get a projector. I know there has been some talk of the sub that comes with them as a package not being that good but considering the model I'm currently using is one of the more budget models perhaps that isn't such an issue for me. I dare say even Mrs Echo will appreciate the demise of the 703's - they look like something out of 2001!
cheers
Andrew
If you can stretch your budget then the 5 separate Mark 2 eggs for £399 plus a £199 velodyne sub is probably better.
If you really want to go better then 5 B&W VM1's and a separate subs.
Though frankly £499 for the Egg Mark 1 pack is still absolutely great value and superb quality.
I do think it's worth going Mark 2 plus better sub for the extra £99 mind.

I believe that Creative Audio (http://www.creative-audio.co.uk/kht2005.htm) are doing the MK1 Eggs with the MK2 sub for £499 but its collection only
I can highly recommend the MK1 Eggs. Never owned a Subwoofer before and I really enjoy the bass it can kick out, although there are probably better subs to be had, I think the package is pretty well rounded and suits my rather small room I have all the kit in :)
G
Are you looking to sell th mission 703's I could be interested.......
Cheers, Brock.
Thanks for the replies gennelmen!
Mr CLH - thanks for the recommendations re the sub - I'll bear that in mind.
Mr Pest - Creative Audio are where I've been looking - they seem to have the current best price that I can find. I understand from having a look on the AV Forums that they only have black ones left at the moment which isn't of great concern to me. I don't think Shrewsbury is that far from me so it would be OK for a visit.
Mr Landers - Well I will be looking to sell them if I do decide to take the plunge. They are great speakers and I was more than happy with the level of bass from them - the addition of a sub to my set up didn't make that much difference to the overall sound. They are pretty big and heavy but I see you are in Lancashire which isn't that far away so I could possibly deliver them if you are interested... whereabouts are you?
cheers
Andrew
I'm in Wigan and am currently using 701s as fronts.
Cheers, Brock.
I think 499 for the mk1 eggs is pretty much the going rate, we are selling them where I work for £495.
I think I'm right in saying that Creative Audio have upgraded the sub in their packages and they have a 2 year guarantee... or is that the same for all suppliers? Do you have the silver ones in stock Cap'n?
Brock - You are only about an hour away from me so delivery would be a definite possibility. No idea how much I would want for them though! They're in excellent nick and have the original packaging. They cost me just shy of £300 when new. If you are interested drop me an e-mail
cheers

The sub they provide is the slightly upgraded sub that all mk1 systems came with a while after they were released and not the new sub that comes with the MK2 package (so creative audio tell me??).
I have demo'd the mk1's, mk2 and B&W VM1's and ended up buying the VM1's with an upgraded ASW675 sub. Cost a lot more but makes a lot of difference, boy is it sweet and once I had heard it there was only one way to go!!
I would say that had I not got a bonus from work I would have gone for the mk2's as they were much better than the mk1's and probably as good as the 'native' VM1 package and way cheaper!

Ahhah! Didn't know that - thanks and a fellow Swindonian to! I may be getting my wires crossed here but are you 'Supernosh' from the AV forums? And if you are you don't still have the Mission m7c1 centre lying around you were selling ages ago fo you.

I am that man!
Unfortunately I dont have it anymore (my god you have a memory!!) when I sold my slughtly damaged 602's the same guy game me £30 for it so I let it go!
Bugger!
Oi! You two... get a room!
And you a familyman... disgusting! :D
From what I've read the VM1's are superior but I haven't even looked to see how much they are - I can hardly justify spending anymore than the Kefs MK2 to myself... let alone my good lady. ;)

I got my local hifi store to do 10% off the VM1's but it still makes them around £32 more each than a Kef egg. I could afford that myself but thats getting on for £160 for 5 speakers meaning you're only £40 short of your Velodyne sub. If you can squeeze more out then 5 x VM1's and a REL Quake or MJ Pro. If not go for 5 eggs and a velodyne!
Thanks again CLH - it's definitely something to bear in mind.
Just for Brock-Landers... no pressure but here is a link to some reviews of the Mission 703s which you might find useful.

Just to let you know I have three silver VM1's going for sale at the moment if you were interested. All boxed and minty mint.
I might have one of the VM1's off you - how much?
What the hell are you buying now?
Not to dampen your enthusiasm or anything, but you really should get along to a local hi-fi shop and have a demo of the Eggs/ VM1. Whilst the eggs do sound great, they will sound very, very different from your Missions.
I upgraded speakers last year from large stand-mounts and the Kefs were top of my list for replacements. Having listened to them, however, I couldn't get away from the fact that they sounded 'small'; fantastic positioning of the sounds, but 'small' (and that was using a Rel Q150 sub.). The VM1 were a better compromise, trading positioning for a bit more weight but in the end I went for another set of stand-mounts.
As I say, you really do need to take a listen for yourself.

I'm not. After moving in everything is magnolia and staying that way. So (bloody surprise) she gets me changing the three silver fronts to three white fronts.
Drop me an email if you're after 1!!!!
I will mate
You're going to have to shoot her, you know that don't you.

Take off, nuke her from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Mind you I have to say the pearl white (which are sort of very light silvery white) do fit in with the Silver WEGA better than the silver. IIRC you have a Sony DX or something which is a darker silver????
Noooo - I have an FQ70 now and the silver VM1's look luvverly with it
