Question:
Hi,
Im rebuilding my AV setup at the moment.
Can someone please tell me, are these £40 Co-Axial cables worth the extra money compared to some cheapo one?
Thanks in advance.
Depends on the quality of the kit in the first place IMO, rule of thumb is spend 10% of what the items worth on cables i.e. £400 dvd player = £40 cables to do it justice.
And remember that you don't have to spend a fortune - current best buy Digital Coaxial cable (Profigold PD481 - I think) - someone over at www.avforums.com is punting this baby out for £9.99 (rather than £19.99 RRP) and another best buy Scart 2 Scart is the Philex Thor which can be picked up for £23-24'ish quid rather than £30 RRP.
Digital cabling is one area where I'm less than convinced that the 10% rule of thumb makes much sense. I'd second D J's advice and recommend that you get a decent £20ish cable. At that price you should at least get decent connectors and the required 75ohm impedance which should really be all that you need for a digital connection.
Not so sure about that 10% thing.
Just bought a plasma, I wouldn't buy £350 worth of cabling for it though.

D J Fryer - thanks for the top tip on the Profigold!
Any suggestions as to a half decent speaker cable? Got some Acoustic Research stuff on back order but would happily cancel if I got a decent recommendation.
QED Silver Anniversary is well regarded for all-round use at around £5/metre.
Don't buy this 10% bull either, better to buy the best connection leads you can afford rather than until you upgrade your AV equipment and throw out the older leads for better ones...

The 10% is just to give you a rough idea, a £40 cd player isn't going to prform like a £200 player just by putting a £160 cable on it but if you spent £1600 on it then it may be worth having a £160 cable
I have to say I agree with D J Fryer though as there are some very good leads at bargain prices if you know where to look I still use these (http://custom1.farnell.com/cpc/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CPC+Catalogue&product%5Fid=30902) for all my scart lead requirements and haven't found a cable that gives a better picture IMHO.
