How do I find out if I can get Cable in my area?
Question:

Hey peeps
Sorry to be so clueless but can anyone help with this question?
I'm pretty sure no cable operator exists for my street (a cul-de-sac) and I'm pretty sure no cable has ever been laid in the road.
How do I find out who the local cable operator is and whether they provide service to me?
Also can more than one cable company service the same area?
I have SkyDigital because I can't get Freeview & our analogue signal doesn't include channel Five :brickwall
We've also been looking into getting broadband and I just wanted to be sure that I couldn't change everything to a cable operator before going with an ADSL service.
Anyhelp would be great :)
Cheers
Richie

In my area it's easy to tell, all the pavements have a 8-12" strip of tarmac running along its entire lenght, usually badly laid and sticking out like a saw thumb, outside of each house, in the pavement, is a little plastic cap about 2" diameter, presumably inside this is all the cable connection stuff.
Also, I'm sure NTL has a checker on their website.

Cheers guys
I've checked both the NTL & Blueyonder (Telewest Broadband) postcode checkers and neither offer Broadband or Cable TV services in my area.
Am I right in thinking that these are the only two cable providers in the UK - or am I completely wrong?

Answers:

NTL's postcode checker may not be completely reliable. It still says my area is not cabled, even though I have NTL cable tv and broadband.

I'm in Surrey and just inside the M25.
My local telephone exchange has only recently been broadband enabled.

My local telephone exchange has only recently been broadband enabled. Warlingham exchange..? :suspect: It is pretty ***** there mate, like you I couldn't get C5, or Freeview and due to building regs, I couldn't have a Sky dish even if I wanted to..
As toi cable, where I lived - at the bottom of Succombs - it was NTL, although they didn't actually cover my road.. :| But, going the other way - Sanderstead/Hamsey Green etc. it's Telewest..
You should be able to get ADSL now though, as BT rang me a week before I moved..

yeah, tis the Warlingham exchange Baps!
I'm at the top of Succombs Hill btw! ;)
I think a long time ago cable arrived to the end of Homefield Rd (if you know that road?) and I'm right in the middle of a little pocket where no company wants to know! Seems the catchment areas ignore me!
Back then I think (although not sure) it was "Croydon Cable Co" (or something - hance the question about the UK cable companies!) that were laying the cable (but that was years ago now!). I think the reason it never got as far as me also has to do with the attitude of people who live around here who at the time considered technology to be the work of the devil or something (and many still seem to) :(

Homefield Road - is that where all the big posh houses are? How on Earth can you afford to live there?
I think Croydon Cable Co were the original cable layers - I remember they started in Selsdon - was over 20yrs ago now..
