Bi-polar speaker placement Help Required
Question:

I've recently decorated my living room and am in the process of re-install my HC set up. I'm not sure I ever had my bi-polar rears in the right place.
I've read conflicting articles on the placement of these speakers, so now I'm asking the people that matter.
Where should I place these in relation to the listening position??
Thanks before I get the drill out.

Answers:

As nobody has replied I'll offer my two p worth! IIRC they should be to the side of your head but higher. I do know that is where they should be if you upgrade to EX, when the two rear speakers go behind you and well in from the sides.
You may get an answer from the Dolby site although I had a quick look and couldn't find any firm evidence apart from the EX setup.
Hope this helps, basically you should try different positions (of the bipoles, that is!) until you are happy with the effect.

As Dave suggests the bi/di poles should go on the side walls level with - and slightly above - the listening position.
The theory behind di/bi poles is that no speaker cone points directly at a listener. This should mean that the listeners only hear reflecteds sounds which make it much harder for to 'localise' the speakers. The net effect is to give a more diffuse and enveloping surround environment.
Note that if your listening position is very close to the rear wall then you may want to place the speakers high on the rear rather than to the sides. When mounted on the side wall close to the rear wall, the rear wall can create a near direct reflection path from one of the speaker cones to the listeners (making them easy to localise).
