Question:
Thinking about this as a first HC amp. Reasonable reviews, but appreciate some word-of-mouth advice. A bargainous £199 at Empire.
I think the reasonable reviews were written when this amp was £400+ in price. For £199 its a steal.
It blows any comparable amp out of the water, things like the Sony range are just nothing compared to this.
Some High St shops are still charging £350 for this amp.
I have mine hooked up to a set of KEF 2005.2 Eggs + sub, and very nice it sounds too.

Im thinking of getting one of these too.
Any online reviews of this amp?
Thanks
I had this amp for 2 days and it had problems on SKY+ switching between 5.1 and Pro-logic.Denon tech help could not sort it out.So I changed it for the lower spec Denon-same problem. Then I went for the Yamaha RXV630-like the Pioneer it replaced it worked perfectly.Never did get to the bottom of the Denon problem.DVD worked fine, even in the same socket, but tied to SKY+-no go.
Man, off the back of a fabulous recommendation from a guy at Sevenoaks Hi Fi I bought this amp. He said if you were spending £300 you'd be hard pressed to get as future-proof and impressive sounding an amp - so for £208 from empiredirect I promptly chewed on his advice and shopped elsewhere!
Should be arriving by blessed amtrak tomorrowski. then my world domination via panny projector and denon amp will be complete.
of course, my speakers will let me down but this is just the first rung on the HC ladder.

I too have ordered one from Empire! My speakers too, will let me down, I need to completely replace, but as you say, one step at a time!
I bought one of these from the empiredirect website two weeks ago and after many numerous phone calls for them to try and arrange a delivery (an average of two per day since ordering), I have now been told today that the three remaining units in stock are damaged goods and won't be sold. Muppets.
Suffice to say, I am not very pleased with this company - especially if people have placed their order recently and are going to receive one.
Anybody know anywhere else I can order one?
Interesting that, gazman. I've been hassling them all morning about my order (my order history was showing two orders having been made!) and finally spoke to someone who said that my order was being 'processed', then mumbled something about checking stock levels. He said "there seems to be a couple lying around" (!) and that someone would contact me about delivery. Doesn't bode well. We shall see...
That's exactly the story they gave me last week! Nobody ever contacted me though, so don't hold your breath. - I had to call them again myself the next day to arrange a delivery date (something which I did three times with three different people).
Keep me informed if you get any further mate, I want one of these amps.
Right. Called them back. More umm-ing & ahh-ing about what stock they had. "There's a real shortage of amplifiers at the moment" he said. It must have been a bad harvest or summat. Anyway, my doubts got the better of me - I cancelled. Try www.avland.co.uk - they appear to have the Denon in stock, gold or black, for £219.95 delivered. A bit more, but not Empire, if you see what I mean. :)
On the other foot...
I've only got good things to say about empire. Ordered last Tuesday, got a call on Wednesday to say it would be delivered Friday.
Called early Thursday for a tracking number for amtrak, got a nice sounding lass on the phone who told me they didn't have a code right away because amtrak only came to pick up the amp later that day.
Friday I called amtrak, said the amp was out on its rounds, so meandered to the depot straight after work.
No probs whatsoever with the amp - except that of the Sevenoaks bloke who must have scratched through to his brains with confusion at how I managed to bag one for £209!
Result.
Cheers for that link, Springer, I'll have a look. :)
I must be a fool as I decided to call them back to see if they had the black version in stock (I originally ordered the gold version - which all seem to be damaged). The guy took number (again) and promised to call me back after he had called the warehouse to double check that they were ok. I wasn't holding my breath this time either, but low and behold, a miracle occurred and my phone rang with Jason from Empire telling me he could swap over my order from the gold to the black as they appeared to be undamaged. Promising delivery this side of August also seemed too far fetched to believe but that's what he said - Wednesday no less!
Hmmm.. I was in a dilemma, do I let this laughable performance from this company carry on until its probable anti-climatical finale, or do I place an order with avland or hifibitz (which I found just before you posted that link, springer) and wash my hands of the whole affair?
You may have guessed, but like a sucker, I told him to continue with the order and just deliver the black one instead.
Now, can somebody tell me if there are any benefits in having the gold version over the black, appart from if the gold version matches your other units. Is it worth more second-hand etc?
I originally picked gold because, having never had one before, it was a bit different.
What colour did you guys go for? :dork:
Stormywhether, it's good to hear that someone has had a relatively painfree experience from these guys, hopefully my bad luck is over with now and my amp will arrive without incident.
BTW, I wrote my previous post before I saw your's.
I chose gold because it's closer to the silver the rest of my stuff is.
Apart from that it's just a colour thing. I expect it will probably wear off to a splendid white plastic colour after a few fiddles with the knobs anyway.
Don't miss out on the amp, whatever the colour - it even makes my Eltaks sound formidable!
Aww bugger! Dontcha just hate it when that happens?? You think you've reached a final, sensible decision on summat, then gazman or someone opens up a whole pallet of new cans of worms! So it's avland, hifibitz or empire again, eh? I know nowt about the first two, feel uneasy about the other (and don't want a black one!) while stormywhether and his Denon-wielding chums are enjoying the benefits of some top, multichannel electrickery! It's a good job my eltax silverado speakers are a couple of weeks away yet.....:help:
I've gone for one of these with a set of Kef mk1's.
hope it sounds better than my digitheatre :D

From where? AVland are out of stock :( I'm gonna cool off and wait for the next quality A/V receiver to hit the bargain bins. Or maybe I won't :norty:
Here (http://www.discounelectricaldb.co.uk/catalog/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/160?osCsid=a648e0aeb94cd74c93b7c87f1b055159)
went for gold as black is boring me at the moment.
wicked deal Bedford - you won't regret it.
It's my first proper amp, and as far as I'm concerned the best I'm gonna need for at least a couple of years.
What with that and the panny projector - I'm bleedin' sorted!
Only thing I gotta do now is find a half decent pair of surround sound speaker stands. Bought these appalling examples (Haropa) from cpc and they suck majorly.
Hehe...gotta love these people (http://www.discounelectricaldb.co.uk) Ordered the gold model at around 10.00 this morning - hand delivered less than two hours later by Pamela, the lovely lady that took the order!! She was passing our place and offered the service. Top work, Pam!!
Haven't opened it yet, mind - could be a bag o' spanners in there..:gag:
Got mine from discount electrical this morning (along with mk1 kefs)
currently putting it through its paces
Im still waiting for mine from Empire!
Spoke to them this morning, apparently, they have 20 on order which should arrive in a week!
We shall see, not impressed with them so far, the website still says they have them instock!
