Question:
If im not espech bothered by the extra channels, should i buy a digital TV as apposed to a non digital for the improved picture quality? will i notice a big difference or not?
And are there reception issues with digital TV - will I def be able to get decent reception or does it depend (ps i get fine reception on analogue tv)
cheers
I have a Sony Rear Projection TV that has a digital tuner built in along side the analouge tuner. I got this ages ago when On Digitial where in full swing and had a nightmare trying to get a CAM Module to watch the Subscription channels, that aside I have found the Digital Tuner side of things fine, its one less box hanging around the mass of boxes allready piled up.
Couple of things about mine you may want to check out:
- No Digital Teletext on mine.
- Its a sod if you want to record digital TV as the TV has to be on, unless somebody has a way round this as I cant find it!
- You may need a new Antenna to pick up all the channels.
The antenna issue is the one you really need to check out. Our old antenna could pick up all the normal channels including Five without Ghosting or Fuzz but wouldnt pick up all the Digital channels. Something to do with the way channels are grouped on things called Mux's (Do a search for Mux if search is working, I wrote a bit more detailed explanation ages ago)
The picture quality is not in my opinion as good as a well alligned or tuned Analogue picture. If you watch football you can see the difference in the grass. When watching digital the grass seems to be a green haze (?) where as on an analouge picture it looks like grass.
To be honest if I had the choice of a TV with a digital Tuner and it was going to be an extra £50 to £80 I would go for it even over the short falls listed above due to the extra channels which are free.
As the other post shows,Freeview is ok if you are not bothered about getting the max out of digital tv.SKY is a more costly, but infinitely superior system.Signal is more robust than terrestrial, and bandwidth is unlimited so there are dozens more channels(most of them crap shopping channels)but with a digibox you can access all the interactive stuff, like alternate courts at Wimbledon,Big Brother Live 24 hours a day, even when its not on E4,and loads more .BBC has an excellent digital text service too.If you only want a slight increase in choice,I would get the set with the tuner, but to make full use of digital, save the money and then spend it on SKY+.
