Goodmans Home Theatre Kit (GCD-500R)
Question:

Does anyone know ANYTHING about the Goodmans Home Theatre Kit (GCD-500R)?
Here's a picture:

I've found it both on the Kays Website & Argos Additions, although I seem to need to go via the Goodmans GDVD-100R to find it.
This is the info I have so far (although it seems to be more about the 100 rather than the 500):
Plays DVD/CD/CDR and MP3 discs + Kodak picture CD. On screen display. 4:3 and 16:9 playback functions. MW and FM stereo PLL tuner. Zoom. Slow motion/high speed and still picture facility. Search play. 5.1 channels with 5 x 15 watts RMS surround and 25 watts RMS sub-woofer speaker. Dolby digital/DTS/output. Comes complete with pair of adjustable height speaker stands. 5 surround speakers and a sub-woofer. Scart socket (lead supplied), RGB and S-video outputs. Remote control.Main unit: 16¾ x 21/3 x 12¾ ins.
Basically though, that's not enough as far as I'm concerned, I want to no more about it. :suspect:

I'm not one of those to knock Goodmans or Bush just for being the brand they are but the spec you have given is low power for sound output and it would have to be somewhere like a bedroom to work well and even then you probably won't have enough volume at times. As far as I know Goodmans don't have their own factories for home cinema systems so its more than likely a rebranded design from china.
Why not save up a bit more and get a better system.

The GCD-500R is 500W, but I can't find anything about it, and the catalogue's that show it, seem to only have the 500 via the 100 (info above), it's all a little confusing.
It's not for me, it's for someone else... (a cheapskate! )

How much have they got to spend?

i had the goodmasn 3500PK (i think) and that can be picked up pretty cheap now (108 from comet, again i think!) was pretty good in my bedroom, and i'd assume that this is similar.
What is budget btw, i just got the LG 3525 (and once more, i think) for 170ish, and i'm more than happy with it (bedroom aswell btw) from currys or dixons, and its DTS out of the box, easy to hack, and from what i read has reasonable reviews (dvdrhelp.com)

He could also consider this;

£200 delivered, What Videos current best buy at £350. 5/5 picture, superb sound, multiregion hacked via its own remote. Beautifully built and designed. Plays all the lesser formats like vcd/svcd etc.
Only two issues with it. One is that it doesn't have s-video out it has the far better RGB as well as composite. Also it only plays back in pal mode even ntsc dvds. There may be a way of changing this but I've not found it yet. Lastly be-direct describe it, as having progressive scan but it doesn't have it. Thats only on the usa model.

Budget around £250-£300 max.
It's for a lounge.
Funny you should mention Samsung, I was looking around last night and found quite a few Samsung home theatre kits that would probably be more suitable than the Goodmans AND probably easier to find hacks for.

If he's considering Samsung only consider the htdm150. As far as I know none of the newer models compare to the htdm150 and it is the only samsung home cinema system to be highly reviewed. Most of them have truly superb pictures but the other systems tend to have worse sound. There is a samsung htdm550 for example which is the model up from the htdm150 however it has been supplied with different speakers to cope with the higher output of that system which simply don't sound as good.
Its worth checking out his local currys/dixons as they may have the samsung htdm150 for £300/350 and see what he thinks of it then buy from be-direct if he likes it.;)
