Green Marks on TV... comes and goes.... HELP
Question:

As told to the forums own ThomasD....
Ok well basically.... whatever I do, I seem to get a green mark on the left (and a very very faint blue mark on the right - this is facing the TV). Now normally this is when a magnet is near it as I understand. However... there are no magnets near it. Speakers are about a good foot away, and have been for nearly 2 years although this has only happpened recently. Only thing thats changed is a new laptop but that's a good 3 feet away, and I'm sure it's happened a while after that too anyway.
No magnets have gone near it, it started when I used a US Gamecube and Custom RGB lead when I think it was Pin 21 was cut to "trigger" the RGB.
The TV is a Phillips 21" Nicam Stereo - Model = 21PT4475.
I noticed this when using a PS2 through a scart switcher, tried Different PS2s, with different leads and with/without SCART switcher. Get it on Xbox now also, so can't watch DVDs or play games without this green mark. I don't use it to actually "watch" TV anyway since the signal is **** poor. I've tried moving about the leads and wires etc and still no joy.
I have a feeling I'm out of warranty, definitely out of original warranty but can't find any extra extended warranty documents for Comet.
My questions: Presumably this is somethign magnetic, but why does the green mark come and go, and sometimes get worse to the point of a dark green at times (most notably when games/DVDs have been paused for only a few secs or longer).
And if this is in warranty and I likely to be ok? Or is it going to cost me a kidney?

Have you tried turning the tv off and on a few times via the power switch on the front?
I'm afraid that is the limit of my technical knowledge.

Answers:

lol yes mate I've tried that, and unplugging and letting it "degause" - works for a bit but soon comes back :(

Colour CRTs are prone to this, external magnets or no.
It can be fixed. A trained, knowledgeable, engineer sticks tiny permanent magnets to the neck of the tube.
It may be yours already had these (many do) and one has become disloged, or demagnetised somewhat.

I see. So what are we looking at... I mean should I disconnect everything ready, is he going to have to take it to bits, how long are we looking at?

Answers:

How long is a piece of string? It all depends, I guess, on the competency of the engineer.
1: It should be done in situ rather than at a workshop.
2: The back will need to come off, but it will need to be able to be powered up. A well-equipped engineer will use a test signal generator to detect what is needed.

Well, I have a 21" Panasonic Quintrix set, US GameCube and custom RGB lead - and I have the same problem sometimes!
Usually it's on areas of flat color. For example if I leave a game paused, and the pause menu is a yellow box, there's occasionally smudges on either side. Could this be a design fault, are the TV's speakers possibly causing it?

if its not magents then it could be this:
My tosh has an odd problem where if a bright patch (ie bright white or sky) is on screen for too long then I get two patches of disclouration:( one each side.
Never really got a explanation, screen was replaced but no difference.
The contrast and brightness settings did (lower was better), different dvd player did (LG was worst then a tosh then my current 656)

Well, here's the problem I was talking about on my Panasonic set (running Sonic Adventure DX, paused, on a USA GameCube with modded RGB cable)

lyris: Is the modded RGB cable done correctly? IE I assume you have some resistors inside - are they the correct value?

Answers:

Almost definitely. I didn't do the mod, but it was done by someone extremely reputable over at NTSC-UK (http://ntsc-uk.domino.org).
