Question:
I have a Panasonic series 5 plasma that can take NTSC and PAL proggresive scan ( as you guys probably know) and want a DVD player to take advantage of this... I have gone down the Denon 2800MKII route with the normal failings (learn by your mistakes)
All I want is to put in a disc (region 1 or 2 ) and the machine plays it using the suitable proggresive scan output , ie NTSC region 1 and PAL region 2.....and wait for it, all this without any lip sync probs.....is this too much to ask!!!
Any suggestion would be very welcome and will save me hours taking back poor machines!!!!
Thks in advance...Malcolm:notworthy
Harmon Kardon's DV25
or if you want to up the ante...
Arcam's DIVA DV88+
There are other DVD players from Sony and Philips (963SA?), but I can't remember the model no's off hand.
How about the new Denon DVD2900
I think prog scan is still very new, and many manufacturers still haven't bothered to implement the technology just yet.
Give it another year, and im sure most major brands will have Prog scan players in their range, what surprises me is just how low-key and low-tech Panasonic's current range is... :suspect:
very happy here with the philips 963sa in pal & ntsc progscan, after having had both the mkII and original 2800.
Sony's imminent models (730, 930 upwards) are meant to have pal progressive scan but are still unconfirmed... perhaps Justin will pop up with the latest info on this.
as for the 2900, based on Denon's previous track record, I'd wait till they sort out the firmware/ multi-region situation and other bugs... have a look at the growing avforums thread for current state and problems. its almost a perfect player but not quite.
I've got a H/K DVD25 with my panasonic 5 series, and it's great. Lip sync isn't an issue, and it's multiregion out of the box (wel, if you get it from Justin in the PowerBuys forum).
Lip sycn isn't just the dvd player though, the extra time it takes to display a progressive frame adds to the issue, so the only way to completely eliminate it is to get an amp that can delay the sound, like the Denon 3803.

AFAIK, pretty sure this is configurable on the Arcam DVD player itself also not just the amp.
You could always buy a PRO-V and then use prety much any dvd player.
fraid not, the ProV is awful as a progressive scan source - try the classic Star Trek Insurrection DVD scene as a test of this, and also do a search on avforums for more detailed info on its suitability.
its not a solution as a progressive scan player, fine for upscaling composite and svideo to SVGA/ XGA but its nothing like an Iscan or similar hardware.
PIoneer 656 does it too as I understand and it's a class player of course
nope:) only the US version of the 656 does progressive scan.
there was some mis-information on UK websites before it was released which probably explains the confusion.
Gotta be the HK surely??
Or Sony's new DVPS930 (no reviews yet but PAL and NTSC prog).
