Freeview with portable aerial?
Question:

Is it possible to receive Freeview if the stb is only connected to a portable aerial type thing, or does it have to be a proper roof mounted jobbie?

Proper aerial only. I had this discussion with the local Dixons six months ago. It won't work with a portable...

This is probably better suited to the hardware forum.

Oh and I think for once Dixons may have given some real advice, I doubt it would work with a portable aerial as OnDigital as was used to require a very good signal to prevent breakups.

I use a portable ariel with my Phillips digibox without any problems. But I do live in a 6th floor flat in the middle of London.
It really depends on your reception, if you can get clear analogue pictures with a portable ariel then it will probably work. Try adding a booster if it doesn't.

I use a portable one in a normal house and its in a ground floor room. I use a booster tho, and its fine...without it I need to keep moving the aerial.

I use a set top aerial and it's fine with my ex-OnDigital Nokia box. I live in London a few miles from Crystal Palace and if anything, the signal's too strong. Analogue is surprisingly bad with so many ghosted images.

I use a portable aerial with a built in booster with my stb and it works fine. I did have a problem tuning it though as it did not pick up all the tv channel. I used the main aerial in the house to set it up and moved it upstairs to watch on my tv.

I also use a portable ariel with no problems but then I'm reasonably near to the transmitter.

I use a portable ariel upstairs and although checking the coverage area i should not be able to get all the channels it seems to have picked them all up. :)
