Question:
Okay, I do everything on my computer, watch movies, dvd's all that. I just ordered some dvd's and I noticed that when I play it on my computer which I am used to, it doesn't look as good as the standalone in my father's room. I usually run windvd @ 1024 x 768 and it looks good, but not as good as a standalone. Is there a better pc dvd player out there (windows btw) and is my resolution good for dvd movies?
1024 x 576 is all you need for full PAL playback. Any more is just duplicating or interpolating info.
I'm using PowerDVd XP via a projector (7ft wide image), and the picture quality is excellent.
What exactly is wrong with the picture on your pc? Your pc monitor should be better than the tv due to its higher resolution and progressive display.
Gary.
well, the picture is kind of pixelated, and kind of jagged. If I lower the resolution, will it reduce interpolation? I watch mostly anime dvd's (don't make fun) and the lines in them are kind of jaggy.
they are all R1 dvd's btw.
I understand a lot of anime DVDs are not encoded well or come from poor (composite masters) sources so can comb quite badly
This is probably more noticable on a PC monitor (due to better resolution/Progressive image) than on an interlaced TV (where all sorts of nasty things are hidden)

well, this one is rather new, and it looks clear and sharp on standalone. It's not horrible on my computer, just not the same quality.
The better resolution on a PC monitor is actually a lot more unforgiving for DVD. At the end of the day, DVD has two set resolutions (although there are some others supported, 99% of commercial DVDs support these)
NTSC - 720x480
PAL - 720x576
That's pretty much the 'native' resolution of TV but obviously on PC, you're going to be up-scaling the resolution, so blockiness probably will manifest itself. The clarity of a monitor displays also means that the pixelisation associated with MPEG2 artifacts will be even more exaggerated than usual.
What are the source DVDs in question? The answer could be that they are actually interlaced video in which case, it will look better on a normal TV (because normal TVs are interlaced, monitors are not). Your software DVD player will be deinterlacing the image on the fly and it will not look good. And it will look even worse if you leave it interlaced.
I use windvd, and it has settings for interpolation. Auto is default and I have a feeling it interpolates always. So if I watch movies at that resolution, will it look better? BTW the dvd is Berserk vol 1. the publisher is Anime Works.
any good pc-dvd solutions that I can get for free? DO I need to update mpeg2 decoder or do the software dvd players come with their own. Some dvds just look a lot crisper and more bold on my standalone dvd player than they do on my pc player.
