Question:
Can any of the techically literate out there explain exactly what artefacts are and how it/they manifest themselves please ? It's not the same thing as what I would term "pixellation" is it ? Thanks
Artefacts on DVD's are generally due to poor encoding in the transfer process - they can show themselves as jagged edges or blocks or anything that clearly shouldn't be there.
Artefacts on, say, Sky, are usually due to bandwidth limitations, adverse weather conditions or poor MPEG encoding of the source.
In this context, artefacts is a general term to mean, really, 'anything which may be wrong as a consequence of the underlying process'. Pixellation is an artefact.
For example - you might say that poor geometry is an artefact of CRT TVs, or poor black levels is an artefact of LCDs. A momentary pause is an artefact of 2-layer DVDs and so on....
I think I've got the picture ! No pun intended. Thanks all.
