Question:
In the past i have only bought budget DVD players as they were multi-region and well, cheaper. I am now considering getting an entry level Sony, Toshiba, Pioneer or Philips DVD player. I'm just wondering if there are any plans to bring in a new technique like they tried with RCE to stop people playing dvd's from other regions? I assume philips are safe as you can actully select what region you want the dvd player to become; the same with some budget players now, it allows you to select the region you want to make the dvd player in the menu, effectivly giving you the option of just selecting region 1 essential making the dvd player the same as those sold in the US so I don't see how any new technique can get round this? However what about players that either have a chip fitted or have the software modified?
As long as you can manually set the region there's nothing they can do.
RCE is about as tricky as they can get while still working with all region locked normal players.
(RCE discs are in the strictest sense of the word region 0, but interrogate the player about what region it is once it starts playing, and diverts to a warning screen if it doesn't like the answer. Fools some autochangers, although most modern autochangers default to region 1 for a region 0 disc, others stick with the same region as the previous disc. I suppose it could be improved by stopping people just using title selection to bypass ever bothering with the menus, which some people with older multi region players have to do, or indeed allow them to effectively play on region 2 locked players:lol:.)
well, my Pioneer DV350 from amazon plays RCE discs fine.
