help! sherwood receiver no longer plays DD 5.1!
Question:

Over the weekend, my 3 year old Sherwood RV 6090 RDS receiver seems to have lost the ability to push out Dolby Digital 5.1. All discs are now processed as dolby pro-logic, no matter what I do with the controls, remote, or soundtrack selection on the DVD. I have also tried changing the lead between dvd and amp, no luck.
Not sure how it happened, but my children were watching something earlier in the day and suddenly shouted that the sound had gone - it came back moments later, but I think it probably came back as pro-logic, though I did not notice until I tried to watch something later that night.
Has anyone come across a problem like this? Is it repairable? Am I going to have to start shopping around for a new receiver?
Any advice very welcome.

I have a Sherwood 6106 and it has been fine for the past 2 - 3 years that I have owned it.
I have had occasional problems with the sound though, particuarly the sub setup.
This has only happened twice, but the sub channel reverts to giving bass on every sound (kind of a standard stereo mode) where every "on screen sound" makes a bass thump, doors closing, peoples voices etc.
Whereas the bass should be just reserved for explosions, and crashes and bangs etc. You can select whether you want the sub to react to all LFE input or just the dedicated .1 channel.

Sorry that doesn't help you much does it!?
Did you buy the amp from Richer Sounds?
Have you tried giving them a call?

hi there
I actually don't have a sub - consistently vetoed by my wife, on the behalf of children asleep upstairs :(
I may try richer, that's a good idea - yes, it was bought from them

Check your nippers haven't set the DVD player's digital output to PCM. This would have the effect you describe and nothing you could do on the amp would make any difference.

No problem mate - I had that amp and a Samsung 709 as my first set up. The 709 defaults to PCM output - it took me a few goes to finally find out what I needed to do to get 'proper' dolby digital out of it all.
