so Yeah, if your dvd player has a built in decoder then all you need to do is plug the speakers and sub into the dvd player and your sorted:thumbs:
thankyou, told you it was a stupid question!!
EDIT cos i dont want it closed now!
You need an amp to drive the speakers and the sub. A decoder won't do that, so unless your DVD player has a built in amplifier, you'll still need a receiver.
If a DVD Player only has a built in DTS or DD decoder, it will just output the signal in whatever format (Optical, Coax or just 6 separate channels). This signal has got to be amplified, so an amplifier which will take the appropriate signal will amplify and send to speakers that are connected to the amplifier.
An all in one incorporates the DVD player, decoder and amplifier. A DVD player with a decoder is useless without the amplifier and the appropriate amplifier will almost certainly have the decoders built in so I would not buy a DVD player just because it says it has built in decoders.
i'm looking at the Philips 580HC which (as the HC implies) is a home cinema set up (ie comes with the speakers/sub) so i assume that it will be alright?? (this one http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/product_main.asp?sku=107582&shopid=SHOPIBIGBAHBGDEOVU0716NXRT1318JANC7201, but supposedly woolies have it for £170, but none local to me do, gotta ring canterbury 2mo, maybe go over on friday :|) says it has inbuilt DTS decoder
It looks like an all-in-one so should have the amp built in.
The Philips is a home cinema all in one. For an extra £30 you could get the excellent LG system. More power sound output and multi-region through the handset.

mmmm, good spot (although looks like comet have stopped selling it, and i'm not sure how popular i am in currys (Bought the venturer system from them, which they had advertised as DTS, but it had DTS digital out (??) so i took it back!))
Will have a look tho, cheers jayok (and Squirrel God)
mmm looking into getting the LG one, one slight concern, a quik review in dvdreview says it doesnt have scart sockets? is this right?? what would be the best connection to use if it doesnt (and how much are the leads gonna cost me :()
