Looking for a second DVD player
Question:

Hopefully a simple one, this - my wife and I are looking to buy a second DVD player for the living room now that we've finally bought a house big enough to have our own separate home cinema room upstairs.
Our only requirements are:
- must be able to play R1 discs (preferably via a remote hack)
- must be able to play DVD-Rs created by an Apple Superdrive
- must be as cheap as possible!
We don't need DTS, DVD-Audio or any other luxuries (though SACD compatibility might sway us in the direction of one model over another) as we have those already.
Any suggestions?

Answers:

pioneer's 4xx sommit:) i'd think be the best bet, or the older 35x model.
dunno if they do a cheaper one.

MB there really is only one choice:-

It's not worth spending more OR less than on this fine machine!

£79 at Richers??

don't seem a bad price...parents have the 220, but thats about all i know about tosh's, hadn't even heard of the 330:)
Its a generation old the 220 but still a good player, and should be gettable at a decent price.

330 is basically the update of the 220, RGB, component and a lovely fascia.

I'm very tempted by the 330, especially as my main machine is a Toshiba 550, the big (DVD-Audio capable) brother of both of those, so I'm pretty sure it'll be compatible with my home-made DVD-Rs, as the 550 certainly is.
Thanks for the suggestions - I think I've made my decision!

Michael,
Whilst not the cheapest player around, with a street price of approx £300, the Pioneer 656 is one hell of a machine and great bang for buck matching and even surpassing far more costly players on a performance basis.

mmm the 220 does RGB doesn't it, and should be cheaper which I'm guessing is more important in this case.
656A is a great player (though mines just returning from a month long trip to Pioneer) and would recommend it to any one looking to upgrade from an entry level machine or entering HC with more money:)

I would agree but Michael already has DVDA. I thik a 656 for the bedroom would be overkill.

£300 is far in excess of what we'd be expecting to spend for a second no-frills player - as I said above, I already have a superb bells-and-whistles player, which is why I'm after a totally unflashy one.
I'm still sold on the Toshiba 330 - I haven't found anything else matching that spec for that price.

I don't think you will Michael. It's virtually all the player my Sony DVPS905 is with the added benefit of component.
Visually they are identical and the Sony shades it bitstream sound wise. Otherwise this really is the bargain of the decade and all the player most people would ever need.

OK, I've ordered a Toshiba 330 - many thanks for all your help!

Well, it turned up this morning - and it's exactly what I wanted: since I already own its big brother I was more than familiar with the onscreen menus, and picture and sound seem absolutely fine.
I was particularly pleased that region-switching is automatic - my big Toshiba has to be switched manually (which is OK for review purposes when you want to ascertain the exact region, but annoying in a domestic situation).
All in all, a bargain at £99.99 - again, many thanks for the recommendation!

Glad you like it Michael. Nice to see Amazon managed to despatch something other than Harry Potter as well yesterday!!! Fair play to them.
