Question:
I want to buy a cheap DVD recorder this week but can't decide between the Phillips DVDR880 DVD+R system or the Panasonic DMR-E5- DVD-R system.
Can anyone let me know which they think is
A) Most user friendly and
b) The one which has the cheapest (and best) blank discs?
I just want a cheap and cheerful way of xfering my old VHS tapes onto disc.
Sorry if this is a very basic question. I have read the reviews for each but they seem quite similar.
Cheers
Mark
For merely transferring either is good.
But the Panny has better build and functions if you go beyond that.
Also the DMR-30 sounds better than the 50 for what you want!
There are big reliability issues with the Philips recorders, but my 890 has been an absolute star.
The Panny e50 records from RGB signals in addition to composite or Y/C - perfect for recording from DTV.

You're kind of missing the point of the panasonic if you think of it as a dvd-r recorder, granted it can do this, but the dvd-ram media is where it really excels, for instance you can record one programme whilst watching another, even start to watch a programme from the start, that had already started recording.
But the real clever stuff is you can edit the programmes to remove adverts etc. and you get the free space back to record more programmes.
I spent 2/3 months investigating the options, before taking the plunge with the Panasonic and I haven't looked back one of the best bits of kit I own, almost as good as the Tivo.
