Question:
I am looking at buying one of these units with the media box, but was wondering if the speakers are detachable.
I do not need to run the sound through the unit and would prefere to have the plasma screen 'Picture frame' style.
I have looked at the PDF of the owners manual, and it does have a section on attaching the speakers, but some of the other illustrations seem to indicate that they are part of the external casing.
Any Hitachi 42PD300 owners out there? Or somebody that has installed one and can enlighten me?
Thanks
Tony
The speakers are detachable on the 42" but not the 32". Got the 42" last Tuesday and set it up. It also has a seperate centre option so you can theoretically use it as a centre speaker but I've found that the sound is too quiet - despite having the amp centre turned up. Its an absolutely beautiful looking piece of kit.......until you turn it on! Mines going back tomorrow. Unfortunately, I cant get a decent setup up with NTL Digi at all. Tried all the setups, optimizing using THX disc but simply a no go. Theres too much artifacting and pixel shifting between various channels.
DVD is Good but whats the point when you cant watch normal broadcasting. Its probably a different issue with Sky but with my setup its not worth the £3k.
The factory default options are all bloody awful and you only have one customisable favourite option which I've simply not been able to get away with. As even this needs to be changed depending on source and even channel/programme being watched.
I made the mistake of demoing all sorts of panels and reading a hell of a lot - unfortunately I couldn't find this panel locally to demo and so went for it anyway.(stupid I know but sometimes you need to leap before you look ) The Hitachi is getting some great reviews and I have no doubt that a lot of buyers are perfectly happy but I'm not one of them. I'd have been better going for the Panasonic or Pioneer (Better contrast and resolution from them over a better price for the Hitachi!)
I would definately try as much as possible before going for it. But unfortunately its going to be a guess when trying Digi source over DVD as no retailers I visited had them or had the ability to set them up that way.
So its back to the drawing board for me.:(

I demoed this and found the fan to be very noisy. Unfortunately the best plasmas come in at over £3k :(
Didn't have any problems with fan noise - they're built into the tuner box as opposed to the screen. The screen buzz which my wife picked up on but I didn't was from the transformers in the panel, they were worse with bright scenes.
I'm not trying to put anyone off as its a personal view on the panel. The problem lies with the poor quality of the source and the fact that you only have one adjustable view option. When it showed a good source it was excellent but like anything, if you blow up any poor sources to that size it highlights the problems. I would say that from my point of view my old TX-28DK1 Panasonic CRT had a better image but I suppose its a very subjective issue.
The panle gets some very good reviews and a lot of people are very happy with it but then again a lot have problems with any ALIS panels as well. Should have picked up the Panasonic or Pioneer diplay models with external converters and that wouldn't have cost much more but it seemed like a very easy solution to go for the 'all in one' option.
Now thinking that for the price of any of them I'm going to pick up a new 36"CRT, sort out a 30 foot by 10 foot deck in the garden and have a weekend in Amsterdam with the Missus!!!!
It all depends on priorities I suppose. But I would say good luck to anyone that gets a panel. Despite the problems I had, its nowhere near as bad as going from a 28" to a 42" and back again......the 28" now looks like a bloody portable:p
Roll on the release of the Panasonic TX-36PD30:)
