I need a good universal remote
Question:

Having got tired with flipping between remotes, I'm now looking to buy a decent Universal Remote control that can replace at least 6 remote controls.
I've looked at the Richer sounds website, and there were three Remotes that caught my eye:
Cambridge Audio M1 Enhanced (£49.95)
Cambridge Audio M700 (£59.95)
One for All Mosaic (£59.95)
Has anyone got one of these and can recommend them? Or can you all recommend another? I know everyone raves about the Pronto remotes, but on my budget I can't justify spending over £60.
Cheers for any advice

Ahh yeah. The Kameleon - was this the one that was recently reviewed in Empire? It looks damned good to me. Know of any UK stockists? Cheers

Well these guys (http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/category.cfm/category/83) have it, though I'm sure if you scout around google you'll find it cheaper. :)

Got mine at Argos a tad under £70. Stylish bit of kit, works well too. Good after sales service from OneforAll on freephone number.

It used to be £10 cheaper on the Dixons website but I haven't checked it lately.
Are you sure you can cope without buttons? This has been my biggest headache! I think I can use all my remotes blindfolded but give me a touch screen and I'm lost completely!
You could look at the latest Philips from Argos, it learns as well as having a lot of pre-configured codes.
It's also quite small. I tried the Chameleon but it was too large and I didn't like it buzzing!
I ended up with a Memorex but that now seems to get confused as to what it should be switching on and off, it does have a load of buttons though!

The Kameleon is good IMHO, my only gripe is that it eats batteries (4 x AAA), but then I have no other similar remotes to compare to. I find batteries only lasting about 6 weeks, but it is used a lot, and I use rechargeables so no probs really.
It looks good, is programmable by phone  (yeah no kidding) and I got mine from Dixons (http://www.dixons.co.uk) (ashamed smilie), but they are selling it for £59.99 (online only)
Cheers, Vince
P.S. Just beaten to it by DaveJP, but then I did check to see if dixons are still doing the offer before posting

Does the Kameleon have enough icons to reliably handle TiVo?
I have a simple universal learning remote and without the ability to control TiVo it unfortunately means I still have 2 remotes to hand all the time. :/

I don't have a TIVO so can't tell you for sure, but when you select say TV mode, then the TV may have several pages of buttons, ie you use one button to cycle through say three pages of functions for the TV. This goes for each of the six devices you can control.
When I use the Sky digibox, to use the menu properly, I have to go into the second page of Sky controls, but its not a big problem.
You can learn functions from existing remotes as well, and the one my wife likes is the macro function, we use this to turn off 4 devices with one button press.
Hope this helps,
Cheers, Vince

I can echo the comments about batteries on the Kameleon - even the Duracell Ultras last only about 1 month.
As for Tivo - their default TiVo set up is rubbish (sets to VCR page)
However, I manually programmed the Satellite PVR page (meant for SKy +) and that is perfect. Used the coloured keys at the bottom for thumbs up and down and a couple of other inventive choices for keys. Very neat indeed.

Yeah, I noticed that on Dan Druff's link above a lot of the comments about the Kameleon mention that it guzzles batteries like nothing else, which does concern me a little (even though I do use rechargeables). Is such consumption normal with a Uni-Remote?

IMHO I wouldn't have thought so, as they don't all have illuminated displays "a la" Kameleon. Wonder if turning down the illuminated display to it's lowest setting makes any difference to battery life ?

Go to Dixons (http://www.dixons.co.uk)
on the menu select TV Video and DVD (its at the bottom), then select Remote Controls and hey presto 8 remote controls are listed, the Kameleon is second from bottom, its otherwise known as aURC8060, and its a web exclusive.
Alternatively, do a search on Kamel cos for some reason Dixons list it as a Kameleo instead of Kameleon.

So what you are saying in a nutshell is that Sky+ and TiVo are fully intuitively controllable with the Kameleon?

In a nutshell and under 60 seconds (and only speaking for TiVo). Yes. :)
Go here and have a play yourself:
http://www.oneforall-int.com/english/home/popup_kameleon.htm
Press the sat button (bottom left) then press the scroll button twice. This is the page I use for TiVo (on the real thing you can get it by pressing the Sat button and the PVR button). You should find every major TiVo function on one screen (no obvious place for slo mo).

Same sentiments at DaveJP, I really couldn't get on without actual buttons. Was very tempted by the Kameleon but eventually plumped for the OneForAll 6 (http://www.oneforall-int.com/english/products/urc/URC-7562.htm) (essentially the non-touchscreen version).
More than happily handles my current setup (TV, VCR, DTT, DVD, AMP, CD). The codes supplied are pretty extensive and the in-built modem for updates should keep it from becoming obsolete are having to send away for updates like some other universal remotes.
Battery life isn't a problem on the OFA6 as there's no backlit touchscreen to drain power. Although I think it has less buttons in total due to the Kameleons 'scrollable' screens all other features are the same and it's much cheaper. Wasn't overly keen on the styling but it has grown on me and is very functional. The latest Philips offerings look more stylish but just don't seem to offer the same upgradeability.
My advice is to stick with One For All unless you really want to splash out.
Like to press real buttons = OFA6
Don't mind touchscreen and want something a bit flashy = OFA Kameleon
Want real flexibility and can afford to buy and spend time setting up = Philips Pronto
Really have money to burn = Philips Pronto Pro

It is partly the illuminated display eating batteries. The other factor is the auto-on feature. i.e. you pick it up and on it goes.
This is very sensitive - when I place it on a shelf or the arm of a sofa, it switches on when I walk past it - and no, I'm not godzilla either.
Still a nice remote though - looks great in a darkened room - bit like a sawn off light sabre :)

One for All seem to be getting good praise on here, and I do like the look of the Kameleon, 6 etc. But the only thing that slightly bothers me is that they can only control up to 6 devices and I may need 8.
Has anyone got the 1 for All Mosaic? This can control up to 15 devices, and Richer Sounds website has it at £59.95 - an alleged saving of £190!!! It isn't the prettiest looking thing (and seems HUGE according to the specs), but does it do the biz?

There are user comments on Remotecentral.comhere (http://www.remotecentral.com/ureview/21.htm). It looks ok, but a little limited in what you can do with it. Having just got a Pronto off ebay I'm rather biased though!
You can load new codes into it but it sounds a bit of a pain and I'm not sure how easy it is to reconfigure the buttons to your needs - one thing that the Pronto handles superbly. :D

My Wife has just bought me Mosaic from Richer Sounds, Still playing with it but it works everything that i have got ( far better than my old Sony LCD remote), Can't vouch for the Phillips Pronto but I would think that it should be better than the Mosaic considering its quite a bit more expensive, But at the moment its a definite thumbs up for my Mosaic:thumbs:

Does the Kameleon allow you to program it via your computer, import bitmapped images as buttons and backgrounds, allow as many devices as you need and pretty much unlimited macros?
I was convinced that the Pronto was just a jazzed up normal universal remote, but now that I've researched and bought one I see that it's flexibility allows you to set up exactly what kind of control you need, and the software makes doing that an awful lot easier. With many remotes you're tied to set button types so setting up a tivo (say) is pretty hard to do so that it's intuitive to use. With a pronto you can either import a file that someone else has made or set the pronto up with your own custom button images that actually look like the tivo buttons, making using the remote so much easier.
The pronto is expensive, but you get value for money.

Couple more questions:
What do the Macro's do on a pronto? Have heard a lot of people talking about them but not sure what they actually do!!
I see a number of Pronto's on ebay, which one should I be looking at and is there anywhere else worth looking for one?
Cheers!

Answers:

Macros allow you to set up sequences of operations, so you could push one button and have the remote turn on your tv, change it to the dvd input, turn on the amp and change to the correct input and surround mode, turn on the dvd player and open the drawer.
I don't know what the best pronto is but I think the one out at the moment is the 940, which is the one I got. Average price seems to be around £80-120. I paid £92 for mine.

What sort of things do you use them for?

Answers:

My TV button macro:
- Sets the correct AV input on the TV for my set-top box
- Sets the amp to TV input mode
- Switches the remote to TV button mode where I have channel logos rather than number buttons
My DVD button macro:
- Sets the correct AV input on the TV for the DVD
- Sets the amp to DVD mode
- Switches the remote to DVD mode where I have all the main buttons I use
My CD button macro:
- Sets the amp to CD mode
- Sets the Attenuator on the amp as my CD output is high
- Switches the remote to DVD mode where I have all the main buttons I use
Basically I can control everything through the one remote, switch stuff to the right amp inputs and tv screen modes with one button, and have the interfaces to the devices how I want them - i.e. the channel logos rather than numbers, most used buttons on the DVD etc.

I have just got a hold of the first ever universal remote that works. I have binned my Kameleon and my irritating pronto for this baby. Is a Home theatre master mx-500. Its only £100 and its the dog danglies.
You can get it from here:

I cant stress how good this remote is. It just blows every other one out of the water. It does everything I own. Plasma, Tivo, dvd player, dvd recorder, sky box, video & yamaha amp. I put all these remotes in the cupboard and NEVER need to use them for anything.
It has Macro programmable hard press keys with lcd screens. Just great.

I use the Sony RM-VL900. It controls 8 devices, learns and has 3 macro keys. I love it. I have been using the same batteries for 1 year now. Price: $50 U.S.

I'll agree with all that, I've tried a couple of one for alls, I own a pronto, but this is the first universal remote I'm totally happy with

And I third that! Had one about 6 months - its not as flexible as the Pronto I used to have, and not as flashy, but to be able to sit there and completely control all my kit without having to look at the remote makes it streets ahead.

Ditto the Mx-500 here. I was a bit reluctant to start with, but now it's the only remote I use.
It even worked on the parity devices, because you can quickly press _two_ buttons, and both will be recorded without the use of macros.

That MX 500 does indeed sound just about perfect. I was leaning toward the Kameleon but the MX 500 would seem to me to be an intelligently thought out solution. I really like the idea that you can have custom text labels beside the hard buttons. FAB!
So next question. Where to buy and how much to pay? :)

Perhaps I should have repeated what I said before - I was talking about Ebay prices. They seem to be going for about £100-£120 on the ones I looked at after winning an auction for mine. Some older ones went for as low as £80-90 - I paid £92. Of course you're normally looking at a second-hand unit, but apart from a well-read manual mine was in very good nick, not far off new.

Top service from alan at fpsgamer! Ordered my MX500 yesterday afternoon and it arrived this morning. First impressions are that it is very well made. The button action is solid and the casing is comfortable in the hand (soft touch non-slip plastic) The back lighting is very nice. Just tried programming one button (on/off on my digitheatre) and it worked perfectly. Layout planning is now the order of the day. :)

Did a basic setup for my kit on this at the weekend. Everything works perfectly. Even managed intuitive labellling for Tivo's Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down using THUM(up triangle) and THUM(down triangle). I havn't messed with macros yet so I don't know how well they work. That's next.
