Question:
Can anyone confirm if the LG dvd 4950 can play DVD-R's and if so which ones, or can anyone recommend a budget player that will play dvd-r's?

Check out www.dvdrhelp.com (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=4950+&Search=Search) and you'll see that its limited in what it can play.
That's not totally accurate though, as it also depends on the DVD recorder (which these help sites usually forget).
The Panasonic models sometimes have compatability issues with a small number of players in anything other than the SP mode. I think it's because they played with the DVD codec slightly to optimise real-time recording quality (standard DVDs are encoded off-line over hours instead of the programme/film duration for best quality).
