Are you sure that the lead is the correct direction? Could it be from video/audio plugs to scart instead? Try just hooking the video to the recorder by a scart to scart lead instead and see if that works.

I may be buying one of these today. I'll let you know if I have any problems.

I have the E50, and I've sucessfully recorded from VHS to DVD. You will find that macrovision on many pre-recorded tapes will prompt the recorder to display an "I can't record this" message, but if you want to record your own home recordings then you should have no problems. Just note that it's best to limit yourself to 90 minutes or less of VHS on a disc if you want to avoid a drop in quality.

This may sound obvious, but have you put the dvd recorder on the right AV channel. Then the VHS signal should be displayed on the TV.

Mine seems fine - certainly seems the most advanced DVD recorder out to buy in UK shops at the moment.
Does the VBR function work on DVD-R discs? If I have a 90 min film, I don't want to be using the SP mode for 2 hours and wasting 30 mins when it can be used to up the bitrate.
The book doesn't seem to tell you and I don't want to be wasting a DVD-R disc (I have all of 1!).

Do you mean the flexible recording mode? Yes it does, it works the same on DVD-R and DVD-RAM - it's the only mode that I use really as it gives the best possible bitrate for each recording. The awkward thing is that the buttons I use a lot are under the sliding flap at the bottom of the remote. It didn't take me long to remove the flap though! :D

Great!
I understand compression problems all too well being a DVD buff, so that's made my day. :-)
77 min programme I want on BBC 4 next week, so I can try to FRM then.
This is bad though. My bank balance will get higher if I don't buy any old disc! I can avoid all those bare bones things and just get them off TV.... *evil grin*
