Question:
Right, i'm sure this question has been asked a million or so times in these forums, but i can't find a recent example so here goes...
Which is the best connection that you guys have found for DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1, respectively from the following
- digital optical
- digital co-ax
- digital 5.1 wired (you know, the 6 wires, not sure of the proper term)
any feedback greatly appreciated
Paul
Ok, this is a never-ending argument! Its really close between optical and coaxial and depending on the quality of the decoder on your amp and DVD will depend on if to use the last method (5.1 wired).
Personally I use both optical and coaxial one from each of my DVD players and don't notice a difference. I got cables about 30GBP each for both and they seem very good.
what puzzled me was that i tried the fast and the furious DTS through each of the connections, and the "5.1 wired" connection seemed to give the best output, which surprised me as i thought it would have given the least desirable of the three, the digital optical, seemed slightly muffled in comparrison.
If this helps, my dvd player is a sony dvp-ns905, and my amp is a phillips FR984. Is there anyone out there with a similar setup who could comment as well?

With that setup I am guessing that the Sony may have a better decoder than the Philips for DTS.
Just to explain a little on what Kryten has said - If you are using optical or coax, then it means that the amp/receiver will be doing the decoding. If you are using analogue connections, then it will be the DVD player that is doing the decoding. Thus the differences you hear will be primarily down to the differences in codecs between the two :)
so simply put, my player decodes the audio better than the amp does?

In this case, yep that's right and is as Kryten said :)
If you upgraded to something like a Yamaha, Denon, Marantz etc, then I'm sure you'd find that the amp decoded the audio better.
