DVD or TV problem?
Question:

I have a annoying problem with a fault on my DVD player - well at least I think its the DVD but maybe it is the TV, or perhaps a combination of both.
Symptoms: Often when displaying bright or flashy scenes such as explosions the TV screen kind of jolts for a split second and then carries on as normal. This is not a good thing when watching action packed films!
I assumed it was my cheapo DVD player that was the problem. I have used different scart cables and tried the other available scart socket and even used the S Video connection. I then tested the DVD player on 4 other TV's and the same scenes played back flawlessly leading me to think it must be the TV. The player has monitor output using a single cable which I guess is a composite connection and this also displays the same problems.
I then borrowed another DVD player - a real cheapo player and it played back those same problem scenes fine so maybe my TV is fine after all!
TV: Thompson 28 inch model 28WF25UG
DVD: CAT HTC-2002
Even more odd is that I put the DVD signal through the my TIVO and the problems disappeared but this is not a proper practical solution to solve the problem.
Any advice or general comments would be appreciated. I suspect it is my TV that is maybe being oversensitive to this particular DVD player. The TV has warranty on it so I would like to get it "fixed" if I can (if the TV is the culprit) but I know I am going to have a huge task convincing an engineer that it is infact the TV as I just think I will be fobbed off with "well its just your DVD player

I'd take your DVD player around to mates house and try it on his/her TV. That should give you a few pointers as to where the problem lies. :)

Could you explain the symptom "the TV screen kind of jolts for a split second and then carries on as normal" a bit more?
When you say it jolts, what do you mean?

thanks for the replys folks
Yes I tried the DVD player on 2 other widescreen TV's (both Philips) and it played flawlessly. This is why I thought it must be my Thompson TV but then when I used another DVD player on the Thompson it then also played flawlessly thus pointing to the DVD player being the problem.
The contrast isn't up too high and in view of the erratic nature of this it cant be related to that. I think that maybe I am just unlucky that my Thomson TV and my CAT DVD just dont like each other!
