KEF KHT 2005 MK2 (eggs)
Question:

Anyone heard or heard anything about the new mark 2 kef eggs?
I have seen them advertised for a pretty good price but wondered how they compare to the mark 1's?
Had a demo of the mark 1's against the B&W VM1 and the B&W were streets ahead. So was wondering how the new ones would stack up.
Havent heard a lot about the mark 2's but have heard they are supposed to be better????

Answers:

KEF are going to say they're better though - I can't see that the improvements will be massive as the kit appears to look exactly the same. The sub was the weak point (as with the VM1 package sub) so they have worked on that.
A demo against the VM1's is the only way to go.

I think my local shop is getting **** of with me and my demos!! That would be the third one!!
Apparently they have improved the satellites as well but as you said I guess the best way is to have a listen.
Was just interested to hear from anyone that has heard them or heard about the improvements,

For anyone thats even remotely interested:
Funny you should ask this question I have asked it on another forum!!
I had a demo of these because I am in the throws of deciding between the KEF's and the B&W VM1's.
I had a listen to the MK2's today and it really seems like they have done a great job!!!
The high and mid range seemed way clearer and the satelites really seemed to sparkle and the sub is a massive improvement (you can actually hear/feel it now!!)
I was going to buy the B&W's but am now going to have to change my mind I think!! Especially with this megga deal:
http://209.167.103.167/KHT2.htm
A £200 saving with free speaker cable as well. The difference is now so sligh that I cant justify the difference!!

Fraid not mate.
Drop them an email they always answer! Even on weekends and evenings, I found them to be excellent!
Looks like I may have had one of my patented changes of heart though!!
Have discovered that I have more cash than I thought and am now considering the VM1's with the ASW675.
God somebody please help me...................!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks mate. Thing is I'm penned into similar kit so can easily sneek in Denon 3803 to replace 3802 and Sony 935 to replace 905 etc!! Hence new Eggs.
Thing is if the difference between them is very minimal thing of the DVD's you could buy. ALSO those B&W are quite big really and you do need stands to get them placed best!

Answers:

Nah - I've got the VM1's and they're quite discreet wall-mounted.
The stands are way over-priced as well as £125 per pair.

I'd buy them too. All I'm saying is that sometimes you may not have enough room.
I have all my stuff in a (very hot) cabinet. The eggs live in little square holes on either side. L and R at the top and rears at the bottom either side of equipment. Centre is only TV. I move the rears out when I need to. I just couldn't fit the B&W's into that kind of setup!!!
(BTW we are at long last disagreeing again!!!)

Answers:

Putting them on the wall is not a problem and is totally necessary (kids!!). The thing is the VM1 package and the kef package are fairly similar, change the sub on the VM1's to the ASW675 and there is masses of difference!!
This is the problem:
Do I go for the VM1's and the ASW675 at about £1300 or:
Keff MK2's and a Denon 3803 for about the same price???
I currently have a Marantz RS4200 by the way.
The VM1's with the upgraded sub sound amazing and are way better than the Kef's. But the package deal with the amp is such a good price and may make the kef's sound better???
As I said its driving me mad!!

Answers:

The Denon is a more powerful amp than the Marantz yes, but I doubt it'll be enough to make the KEF's sound as good as the VM1's and the ASW675. You could consider buying the KEF's with a different sub, or saving longer to get the package you really want (which sounds like the 3803, VM1's and 675). I would suggest you try the Velodyne CHT-10 and/or VX-10 subs (£325 and £199 respectively over at www.avforums.com on powerbuy) - or look for a second-hand Q100 or Q150 sub from REL. The 675 is a great sub but isn't cheap.
Personally I always feel that if you go for the package that comes second simply because its cheaper you'll regret in the long-term.
CLH - you need to get a new AV rack mate....

Indeed and I will. Thing is I HAVE the 3803 and Kef's and they are a sublime combination. I totally agree you need to get a better sub.
Thing is I just think that if you can fit in those B&W's at that kind of height then you may as well get some smallish bookshelf speakers. Certainly not aesthetic though and yes you can't put them on the wall!

Is there a massive difference between B&W and Kefs BOTH using ASW675??

Answers:

As if by magic there's a REL Q100 for sale for £300 on this very site:
&threadid=194709
Excellent sub - that'd make the VM1/Q100 package price £925.....

I think you are totally right mate!! I have been thinking about this and it is a lot of money either way so I guess I should get the package I want or I will always be wondering 'what if.......'
CLH - what kind of bookshelf speakers would you suggest (I have heard of M&K I think and they seemed pretty good??). Why would you suggest something like this? Would they give a better sound?

Well the B&W DM303's were always good and fairly compact, no higher than the B&W's you want although of course a little wider and deeper. I think they also sell them as a set with larger fronts etc. Though unless you have a really BIG room I guess the VSM'1 are still a really good discrete bet.
All I guess I was really pointing out is that the VSM's are just a bit bigger than most satellites and require the same kind of standing room as a bookshelf whereas the Kef's can be secreted a bit better.
The Denon 3803 is brilliant though of course you should demo the Sony 555.
I would say the choice is either the Mark 2 eggs or VMS1 but both sets with a different sub.

I take it back those VMS1's are massive:eek:

I'm sure they do but Family woman has decided that £2500 on home entertainment in one month is quite enough!!
Been banned ffrom any more purchases for about 6 months so the Marantz will have to do fot the time being.

It's funny how Home Cinema makes us hate our wives misguided resentment towards our purchases.
Great thing about Denon is the 3801-3803 all look the same;)
