Question:
Below is a message that i sent to savastore but unfortunately they couldnt help me!!
Please can anyone?
Hello,
I recently purchased an Aries DVD-p701 player from your goodselves. The order number is xxxxxxxx, the invoice number is xxxxxxxx.
I am very pleased with the player especially at the price which is unbelievable value.
The reason i needed a multi region dvd player was to play full screen dvd's as i am fed up with the black borders ( i have a 41 inch Sony rear projection square TV ).
After ordering a couple of films from Amercia and punching in the region code i was happy to see full screenage appear. Unfortunately the playback was slightly jerky but enough to make it unwatchable. The playback on the UK dvds is perfect so i determined that it must be something to do with the framerate on USA dvds or maybe a setting for PAL/NTSC? I fiddled about trying to fix the problem but only ended up getting niggled. Please could you advise if there is a remedy for this?
Furthermore i found that when i put in an English dvd in i could make it full screen by pressing the zoom button which would have been perfect ( because i could play all my dvds on this format and not have to order from the USA ) if it wasnt for the fact that i couldnt get rid of the marker on the screen which told me i had zoomed in to x2.
Please would you be so kind as to look into this matter for me and advise if there are any solutions, preferably the zoom problem would be the best.
I thank you in advance for your time.

Welcome to the forums!
The reason that the display is jerky is that the player is outputting in PAL mode. In the setup menu, you need to go to gernal preferences (I think) and change the TV/output type to "multi". This will output an NTSC signal. If you have a new TV it should be fine. If you get a black & white picture, then you'll need to set the scart output to RGB and make sure your TV has an RGB enabled scart socket.
As for the full picture...
I imagine that the widescreen brigade will be along soon telling you that widescreen is the only way to watch DVDs...
I used to hate widescreen, but once I saw how much of the picture is actually cut off so as to fit onto the whole screen (upto 40% in 2.35:1 films), I was horrified. Think of buying films in widescreen as an investment. Soon, widescreen TVs will be everywhere (all digital TV boxes output in 16:9) and people with full screen DVDs will find everyone suddenly looks very fat.
The reason the US have so many full fram DVDs is cos over there most widescreen sets are HDTV enabled and as such very expensive.
If only studios would put pan and scan flagging onto the discs - then you could get both version of the film onto a single disc...
First, I cannot believe you have a superb TV and a cheap DVD player. You would do more justice to your TV with something a little better.
Second, multi region has no connection to finding films on the 4:3 ratio save that some get released in two versions over there, widescreen and 4:3. If your're buying 4:3 ones you'll not need to zoom at all.
You should have an option on your dvd player in settings to change from 16:9 to 4:3.. I would urge you to persevere with widescreen, it's so much better. If the black bars irk you that much turn off all the lights :p
Cheers guys some usefull pointers, i will push on to try and resolve, by the way i do have a 32 inch widescreen tv in my bedroom, but use the one downstairs to game on.
As for the cheap Aries dvd player its ten times better than the £400 Sony one that isnt multi region nor does it have half the functions!
Cheers again
Baz
To recap Baz what you need to do is ensure that:-
1. The player plays PAL as PAL and NTSC as NTSC.
2. That you setup the output of the DVD player to play 4:3 as 4:3 and any widescreen as letterbox.
3. You CAN zoom any letterbox non 4:3 in as neccesary BUT this will result in a worse picture.
4. Best bet is to ignore the bars and watch in the dark.
5. Get used to black bars, once you do there'll be no going back.
6. The dealer probably can't help you.
7. If you really want 4:3 discs then a lot of major US releases are being released that way.
I know what your saying about the bars and i'm used to them and do forget about em. That said it is a lot nicer when its full screen regardless of the fact that i'm losing some of the picture on the basis that what i dont know is there i wont miss. Please accept this as a mentalist block i've got and am too weak or ignorant to get over it so with this in mind please humour me. I'm sure i will evovle one day!
I have tried to change the settings to NTSC which i know the player has but the preference option on the player is locked. I have tried to get hold of the code to unlock it from savastore/watford electronics but theyre next to useless in coming up with the code and simply refered me to a website that only makes lcd screens.
So close but yet so far!!
Does anyone know how to unlock the preference bar on this cheapie dvd player its an Aries p701 and full details can be found on the savastore website.
Heres hoping
Baz
On my P703, you can only get to the preferences menu when there is no disc in the machine (or possibly only when the machine is in stop mode)
Sorted!!
I bow to your wisdom my friend and cannot thank you enough.
Its now super smooth and fully square. ha! It knocked the convergence out a bit when i changed it to multi but that was easily rectified.
Thanks again Kiran

So long as the machine is in stop mode (press stop twice if you are watching a DVD) you can access all menus.
