Question:
This may seem like a really stupid question but are there convertors or any other way of sending audio and video down cat 5 cables.
Ie
a cat5 to digi coax or optical converter and vice versa
and
cat5 to video (such as DVI or possibly component / RGB) and vice versa
Not sure Component and RGB signals over CAT5 but Svideo not a problem see http://www.kat5.tv
Had a look at Kat5 and have e mailed him to enquire, but all the solutions are for 2 channel audio and S-video at best where as I was wondering if it was possible to use the highest standards available ie DVI and either optical or digital coax for a sound and video card on a pc to an amp and plasma in another room all down one cat cable. Given that baseband broadcast quality video is at 13.5 Mbps and DVD audio at 192 Kbps I don't see a problem for a 100Mbps cat 5 cable so was wondering if it was possible to use just one cable.
You have to bare in mind what CAT-5 is. It is essentially 8 quite small wires in close proximity to each other. The length of the run will affect the results too as CAT-5 suffers loss over large distances.
Having said that you can quite easily use these 8 wires as you would something like Bandridge 4-core or similar to carry audio and simple video, so give it a go with some test wire first.

Except the 100Mbps is only on/off and is has differential drivers the 13.5MHz video is around 8bits ( at least 6bits ) of analogue signal.
It might be interesting to build a differential amp onto the ends of each pair of Cat5 and send video over that.
But you only get 4pairs so it's only SVIDEO+stereo.
