Question:
My supposed multi region Pioneer DV-454 (which i got from amazon) will not play R1 disks
It said multi region on the box
It says Multi Region on the inovice
ITs R2 on the rear panel but Im presuming something is altered to standard R2 players to make them Multi Region.
What do you suggest I do?
Anyone else had this problem?
I bought the same player from amazon and it plays R1 disks fine.
If no-one else has any ideas I'd return it to amazon and ask for a replacement. I did that with my first DV-454 when it failed to play CD's intermittantly. I sent it back to amazon on a Wednesday and had a replacement player on the Friday. Excellent service.
No problems since then.
Tell amazon that it is faulty and get them to replace it.
The multiregion DV-454 has auto region select so if it doesn't play R1 it is faulty.
Could you say exactly what symptoms you get when trying to play a Region 1 disc?
the symtons are...
put the disk in... it waits a few seconds then just opens tray automatically
tried 2 x R1 disks and same happens to both of them.
Have had no other problems with many R2 disks jsut never tried an R1 till now.
Hope Amazon help out
cheers for your advice

Yeah, OK - it clearly isn't a multiregion player. Not as described; not fit for the purpose; Sale of Goods Act. You are legally entitled to a refund or replacement, without any legally-stiplulated time limitation.
Sorry, I had to ask; an acquaintance told me a similar story. But when I asked him what the symptoms were, he told me that the disc loaded, but the picture was black and white and rolled and flashed uncontrollably. This was caused by his TV's inability to display an NTSC signal; I saved him the embarassment of complaining about the DVD, which wasn't at fault.
Not sure if this will make it multi-region...
But isnt there something about holding down the power button (or combiation of power and play button) for a few seconds to switch it from PAL > NTSC > AUTO ?
I think its in the small print in the user guide.
will check guide again tonight cheers all

That's just for which standard it outputs in, nothing to do with region.
It looks like they just haven't multi-regioned the player. This particular machine is done using a remote-hack, but it has to be done with something like a Philips Pronto or an IR enabled PDA - you can't do it with a bog standard remote.
Was there a sticker on the box saying "multi-region" ? Both of the units I got had this sticker over where the 2 box flaps join. They told me that it is Pioneer themselves who apply the "hack" so maybe they just sent you a non-multiregioned one by mistake.
yes Dave the box has multi region on it
its definately not though
I tried holding down the combiation of power and play button but it still wouldnt play and I also noticed a display comes up on the telly saying "cannot play disks from this region"
Im sending it back

finally got through to amazon via their e-mail system the return was sent back yesterday.
just received an e from them informing me this multi region DVD player is now out of stock so they are refunding my account on receipt of the old one.
nice now im stuck without a player:(
anyone know where I can get this model elsewhere?
Or can anyone recommend a different player with equal/better quality and functions?
Pioneer DV-550?
I think I need a player which plays ntsc on a pal tv if thats possible? I presume thats what conversion applies to?

Then you've bought the wrong player :D
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any of the Pioneer players have any Quasi-PAL60 kinda feature to convert the NTSC signal to PAL60...
cheers wy2ft doesnt matter about the old player as Im getting a refund
are players with Quasi-PAL60 converters expensive?
if so I might just get a new telly, mine san old sharp dinosaur with only one scart and 50hz screen
Actually you are more likely to find them in cheapo players :D , so you are better off getting a new widescreen tv.
Before you start preaching the sales of goods act, don't forget you are treading on dodgy ground with the fact you are complaining about not being able to play R1 disks in the UK, which legally is dubious.

Both the Pioneer DV-350 and DV-454 will output NTSC as both PAL60 and NTSC.
I think that a lot of other Pioneers will also do this.
I can only confirm the above 2 players as I have personally seen them do it.

There is nothing dodgy about expecting it to be what it was sold as.

It is NOT illegal to own or show, privately, imported video material unless it is classified as 'obscene'. It IS criminally illegal to sell uncertified material, and it is civilly illegal to distribute material outside of its 'authorised' territory. It is NOT illegal to personally import (by mail or any other means) uncertified material out of territory, unless it is 'obscene'.
It is NOT illegal to own or use a R1-capable DVD player in the UK. It is currently NOT illegal to modify a player to open up its region restrictions. It is currently not illegal to sell/distribute players that have been so modified.
So the only illegal act (on two counts) that may be taking place is the sale/distribution of DVDs by UK retailers.
ALL Pioneer players will play NTSC material in either pure NTSC or Quasi PAL.
Ive always had one, started with a 505, then a 530 (which I am currently selling) having upgraded to a 656, a luuuverly machine.
I've tried playing R1's in full NTSC on my panny but get shimmering, but when i try the same dvds on my Playstation 2 (which outputs pure ntsc) i dont get it. And this is the reason im going to have to sell it, apart from that, bloody good player.

The R1 discs that you are trying to play aren't RCE discs by any chance are they? I only ask as my old Wharfdale (MR) wouldn't play an RCE disc if the last disk in the machine was from a different region. There was an easy work around by putting in a non RCE disc of the same region and then changing over to the RCE disc and it works fine.

Got a multi region 454 at Richer Sounds and am very happy with it
still waiting for my amazon refund
