Question:
How did the Laserdisc compare to the CDI and now the Dvds?
Theoretical resolution:
VCD (CDI): H:352; V:240(NTSC), 288(PAL)
LD: H:approx 500; V:480(NTSC), 576(PAL)
DVD: H:704; V:480(NTSC), 576(PAL)
In other words, the resolution of a VCD is half x half that of DVD.
BUT.....
Both VCD and DVD have a compressed digital signal on them whereas the image in an LD is uncompressed analog.
Digital compression can result in some artefacts (pixellation etc). This is much worse, potentially, on VCD than DVD (depending on how the file was encoded) because of the limitations of the MPEG1 system used.
The analog signal on LDs, however, whilst free from compression artefacts, is more prone to noise and grain.
A well-mastered LD can look just about as good as a fairly good DVD. But, as with all things, the standard varies hugely.
The soundtrack on LDs is uncompressed digital - the same as on CDs. The soundtrack on VCDs is compressed digital (sames as MP3) and on DVD is also usually compressed digital. Purists believe that uncompressed audio sounds better than anything that is compressed.
do cdi have any resolution...lolby the way the ac3 on lds generally sounds way better than tsame dvd proving that the lossy dd does cause problems probably in the harmonics
