Question:
hello people,
thought i'd take the short trip from the software forum section to hardware in order to ask a quick question.
i've just bought a dvd player which has been modded to output pal progressive scan. my toshiba tv (pretty new) has component video inputs. if a display has component video inputs, does this necessarily mean that it can handle progressive scan signals if sent. i've check out toshiba's website and those handy people have nice drawings of all of the connections from crt tvs to plasmas, but even on the plasmas, they all say component video - none of them say progressive scan enabled, or progressive scan etc.
what's the deal - new tv needed if i want to use pal progressive scan or not? you all know which answer i'm hoping for...
the short answer is
component inputs do not mean the TV is progressive scan compatible
but
All Progressive scan compatible TVs will have component inputs
What we really need to know is the model number of the TV - the Strata range (and possibly the new picture frame 2 series) do support NTSC (not PAL) Progressive scan via the component inputs
Phil
28Z70B is the Toshiba model number. i've done a quick search on toshiba.co.uk - there's loads of similar model numbers and i've fear its already been superceded. (maybe it is approaching 6 months+ now???)
anyway, doing a google.com search will show you the tv. it's still for sale at retailers. on toshbia's site, the 28W33 is probably the closest.
looking at it, i reckon the tv is not progressive scan. i want to get that new 36" crt tv from toshiba - looks brill. that has progressive scan written in every spec list i've seen, so presumably that'll be suitable for me. i like the tv, but the cheapest i've seen it is 1450 (give or take 50) pounds including vat and delivery. anyone know a cheaper place.
thanks for your initial reply, by the way phil. i hope you and others can help me from here.
just found a review of MY set at:
http://www.whatvideotv.com/testbench/Televisions/Toshiba/Toshiba28Z07B.shtml
confirms no progressive scan. boo hoo.
therefore, anyone got a cheaper price that 1425 for the toshiba 36ZT29B
Where have you seen it for £1425?
Cheers, Brock.
Susie, you're unlikely to see noticable differences using PS unless you go above 32" (even at 32" it's barely noticable IMO!).
brock - found it for 1425 inc vat and del at qed-uk.com . ordered from them before - they're good. 1425 will take a bit of time for me at the mo though, might go ex-demo. there are some mint condition units out there.
Edit: btw, what 36" crt tvs are there which CAN handle PAL progressive scan. preferably some respected brand - sony, toshiba etc. that is also a great tv anyway.
progressive scan on CRT's is not very well supported. Toshiba do NTSC on there Strata and Picture frame range. PAL progressive is rumoured on on the new Picture Frame 2 however every review I have read states that it does not support this.
Panassonic are the only other manufacturer that I know of that supports Prog scan on CRT's. And I believe that they do have TV that can do both NTSC and PAL
I have 36" Strata and can tell you the pic quality is amazing on it but I do not have a prog scan player so can not comment on that, however I can out put a pic via component the player and the pic quality is mint.
